Well, nothing's really appealed to me with the force of FFVII's grit. Everything after that looked downright...hygienic. Way too unblemished, perfect. VII was the only Fantasy where you saw the dirt on the main character's armor.

What are you, some kind of dirt freak? Yeah, the style different, no denying that. But too hygienic? How do you find that in there?

Heh, I guess I
did use some bad word choice, there...I'm actually a bit of a minimalist clean freak in real life...
What I meant was, it's the little imperfections that really make something connectible. Squall had that big scar running across his face, sure, but that was an intentional, aesthetic element that not many people can relate to. Plus, it looked cool.
But it takes more than scars to make something believably real. Screenshots from FFX's characters look unbelievable, of course (in the good way), but the overwhelming sense of perfection gets to you after a while. It's the little touches, like a squiggle in the
hamon of Cloud's Buster Sword or the scuffed dirt on his shoulder armor that made the characters look like they really went through the hell of each game. When I see a CG design without a fleck of dust in place, no sense of imperfection or human misery anywhere (which Midgar had in abundance), I simply can't feel as much emotional attachment to the environment or the characters.
Edit- Have you seen the character designs for Twisted Metal: Black? THAT's what I'm talking about...

To each his own.
