All quotes courtesy Michael O'Sullivan of "The Washington Post"'s Weekend section.
"Let's face it: "Final Fantasy" is a puppet show, albeit a hyper-realistic one...What, pray tell, [is] director-producer-gaming software mastermind Hironobu Sakaguchi trying to compete with? Japanese anime? PlayStation? Pokemon? Jar Jar Binks?"
[note: Interesting. Any point he may have been trying to make is lost on me in a sea of inane, poorly placed stereotypes and buzz-words. How does a movie compete with PlayStation?]
"I never forgot for a minute that I was watching a cartoon, all the way down to the silly, pseudo-spiritual ending, an ending whose very incomprehensibility is actually one of the more endearing hallmarks of anime."
[note: Maybe he doesn't understand that not all endings must bring instant resolution and gratification. Some are meant to be thought through, discussed, remembered for their intricacies.]
and the piece de resistance,
"...avid video-gamers, accustomed to weak plots and no character development, may find "Final Fantasy" satisfactory, but the average movie-goer will not."
[important note: I needed to reconstruct from memory the last inflaming quote. I was unable to find the original on the internet. Rest assured, however, that my memory is quite healthy and accurate and, either way, my bulging eyes read and reread that sentence so many times that I am quite sure I remember the general condescendingly snide tone.]---

So we're accustomed to weak plots and no character development.....

Yeah, because people who play videogames are obviously dumb and have no idea about there kinds of things, unlike movie-goers. We are just a misunderstood generation...

Man who the hell is this Sullivan guy and who does he think he is. This dude deservers my CHOP from the heavens. Anyways, I won't spend anymore time with ignorance.
I think that The Spirits Within was a movie that was misunderstood by many (The mainstream for obvious reasons and gamers because of the title that can be very misleading) and ahead of it's time.

Quote:
My Critique of the Critic
This critic has made a shameful mockery of the art of movie criticism. Instead of judging the movie on its own merits, he judges it through the filter of his own warped world view. O'Sullivan shows us that objectivity is a word foreign to his vocabulary, and after reading this review, I would not take anything he has to say about any movie seriously.
The bottom line: O'Sullivan does not like this movie because it disagrees with his politics. If I were the editor of the Washington Post, he'd be fired for incompetence.
From www.cannabisnews.com/news...7119.shtml , by yet another moviegoer dissatisfied with O'Sullivan.
His e-mail address should be in this Friday's Weekend section, along with the original quote, if I can find it. ---

thats nothing, look at what a friend told me:
"FF8 is a game about how the main character, Squall, fights with his inner feelings to fall inlove with Rinoa, the other main character, becuase he has a problem. You see, hecan't love, and Rinoa helps him love. But there is alot of meaningless fighting in the prosess, just don't pay atention to that, and you'll understand everything"
He said some other stuff also, but they are just too stupid to post here!! I just stood there, resisting the temptation of killing him...I regret I did so I culd kill him..
