Final Fantasy XI, the first of Square's RPGs to go online and the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for the Playstation 2, may do away with the tried-and-true subscription model.
According to CoreMagazine, Square CEO Yoichi Wada stated that there would be no fee for accessing the PlayOnline network during a Square Online Party held in Tokyo. The hope is that this model will result in more software sales. For the most part, PC MMORPGs rely on monthly subscription charges for continual streams of revenue and to offset the costs of server maintenance, game upgrades and the labor involved.
CoreMagazine also reports on a beta testing kit that was made available to attendees of the online party as well as a LogiTech keyboard/controller combo that designed to work with Final Fantasy XI.

Personally, I'd love this, since I'm not looking to plunk down another monthly fee for something since I am not rich.

I've heard that from a few places now...I think there might be some truth in it. *crossing my fingers*

When accessories to get onlnie start being sold for PS2, i'm gonna be one of the first few people in my town to get them.Never underestimate stupid people in large numbers. They can do a hell lot more damage than you think.

I think its true. But this really isn't that great considering we have to buy a modem, a hard drive, a keyboard, and the game, to play FF Eleven.-Spok-

you don't necessarily have to buy a modem. if you have broadband all you need to do is plug in a usb ethernet adapter and you're good to go. as far as keyboards go, (don't quote me on this) you can use any pc keyboard with a usb connector.

So I have to buy an ethernet adapter and a USB keyboard. Also, is it true that Windows 95 does not support USB accessories? If that is correct I would have to get another OS, which is something I don't wish to do.
In all, FF 11 will cost a pretty penny so it better be one hell of a game.-Spok-

You're so right. The amount they're trying to make all of us cough up it better be one of the best games ever made, let alone the best online game ever!!katyjag

i'm not sure how much usb ethernet adapters cost because i got one for free when i got roadrunner. spok i can send you mine if i decide i'm not going to use it. i'm still deciding whether or not we can get a wireless network in my house. you can pick up a cheap usb keyboard for $25, even less if you look around. yes, win95 (why are you using such an outdated os?) does not support usb.
