Square: Windows Final Fantasy XI Coming To America
11-OCT-02
Square officially unveiled the complete PC version of online-only PS2 RPG Final Fantasy XI at a press conference in Tokyo today. The fact that it exists (and is coming out November 7 in Japan) isn't exactly newswhat is news is president Yoichi Wada's announcement that a U.S. version is definitely in the works. Officially titled Final Fantasy XI for Windows, the PC port will be 100% faithful to the PlayStation 2 game, to the point that PC and PS2 users will get to share the same online world. What's different is the graphicsthanks to the PC FFXI's high specs (a GeForce 4 or higher is practically required), the characters and backdrops will be hi-res and rendered in far more detail than the PS2's capable of.
According to Square president Wada, the company is aiming for 200,000 PC FFXI players, a very high number for the relatively tiny Japanese marketplace. "For businesses and users that deal with PCs, the next leap forward is online gaming," he said. When asked about whether the high specs would pose an obstacle, he turned the question around and said the requirements "would make users think about what is necessary, or what they need to buy, in order to experience something they've never played before." Nice spin there, sir.
The conference also included representatives from the Japanese offices of Intel, NVidia, and Dell Computer, all three of which have signed on with Square to support FFXI's PC release. Dell is actually releasing a special computer in Japan on October 31 that comes with FFXI, a controller with the Final Fantasy logo, and a hint book included in the box. They're too kind to their gamers over there.
So there you have it.

i think this game will do very well on the pc. but i think square should support consoles further by adding features only accessable on the ps2, imho. visit red blog!

I disagree; I want a faithful version because I don't want to spend 150 to play a game I can play on my PC for 50. Why? Well, I'm gonna be getting a GeForce 4 partly for that game, and I'd be pissed if I bought it and BOOM, the PS2 version gets snapped with all these extra features.http://webpages.charter.net/gestahr/Movie2.swf

The PS2 won't have those "extra features" because it would be too much for it to handle. You don't NEED a GF3/4, but it'll have some of the DX8 enhancements that a GF2 or below wouldn't have.
Even with an old 1.2ghz Athlon and a GF3, I'd still prefer playing FFXI on the PC instead of the PS2.

well 'extra features' meaning as special items etc only available to the console versions or something. something gimmicky. Im just saying this because i feel square are creating their own demise in the console game area... Well actually i dont know, i vaguely remember hearing square lose on rev last yr?
Anyway i'd rather buy pc version too, best bets there will be some free servers for it. visit red blog!

I doubt they'd have any items or things specifically for one platform, especially since they said that the PS2 and PC versions would go together on the same servers.
I think the only improvements would probably be graphically, or better use of the PC's abilities (ie, keyboard).
I'd also get it for the PC just so I didn't have to get cut on the multitude of jaggies that litter every PS2 game.

This vagueness has led to speculation that the game may not end up coming out in North America on the PlayStation 2 at all, but would rather see a PC-exclusive release. This would make sense from a number of standpoints for Square. For one, the company experienced no end of grief upon the game's release when there was insufficient supply of PlayStation 2 broadband adapters to accomodate the market for FFXI. A repeat of this scenario would likely be a costly one for Square, and using pre-existing PC structures would likely be much less of a headache. Secondly, Square has lined up promotions and sponsorships with nVidia and Dell in recent weeks, deals with two of the biggest names in the PC market. While both arrangements remain exclusive to Japan at this point, it will be interesting to see if this decided PC influence has any bearing on the game's North American release.
