I think it's not a good idea to havwe FFXI for online only
cuz i don't think many people will want to buy a game and then pay each month in order to actually play it
and it takes time to set up the online thing
i think it will just lower the profits
cuz less people will want to play it
I think it's more fun to play by urself sometimes

My personal opinion is that this new online FF shouldn't even be part of the series but be an entire series itself. I wouldn't mind getting together me and my friends and going on a FF adventure. But actually calling it "part of the series" is stupid in my opinion.
