Can anyone tell me why this series is so wildly popular? Why does everyone love it so? I'm serious, too, cause I've seen it and there's really nothing special there, so I just wanna know what you guys think.

It's alright, but not the greatest anime ever. I had this discussion once with some friends though, and the general idea was that it was the first anime that thought to depict mecha in a bad light, thus was kind of revolutionary from the Japanese point of view. Also it was just marketed well in the US and was to some extent highly anticipated, maybe due to its reception in Japan. I think End of Eva is pretty good, and there are certain episodes in the show that I'd pick out as being particularly good, but I wouldn't even say it was Gainax's best work. Even in just 6 episodes, Furi Kuri beats it in to a squidgy LCL mess.

but u can't really compare eva to flcl =p... eva was serious and flcl was... weird, but i do admit flcl is better
i loved eva.. but after watching it about 10 times over, it does start to get boring Ras~aka~Sephy

You can compare them in the sense that they were both made by Gainax.
