I actually believe Akira has a better show at becoming a decent live-action movie than Eva does. Akira would make a decent sci-fi action flick in the hands of someone like James Cameron, or any similar director.
On the other hand, with Eva, I can't see them making a movie of it without making some SERIOUS changes to the story and characters (beyond a simple adaptation of a 13-hour series to a 2-hour movie). A bad idea in my opinion, but I guess I should give Gainax/ADV/Weta the benefit of the doubt.

Worst-case scenario: "Yes, we actually have a script ready that we think will grab the average American moviegoing public's attention for two hours. Of course, we had to cut out some minor characters (Rei, Gendo, Asuka, Misato, Kaworu, etc..) who did nothing but overcomplicate the plot. Still, we promise to deliver the most action packed giant robot versus aliens movie the world has ever seen!"---

Gut reaction makes me think this is going to be a terrible film...
They guy writing the article has a decent point in that you're going to have difficulty putting the plot of Eva into a two/three hour film, yeah. -_- And if they don't do a decent Asuka death rampage scene that movie won't be worth it. ^__^

The key words is that its "CONCEPT ART." I've heard a couple of people complaining how "fake" it looks and such, but they seem to forget that simple fact. While its easy to see someone such as Ralph Mcquarrie's influence on a film like Star Wars, there's definately a difference between the visuals in his conceptual art and designs, and the finished product. I think it's just a bit early to start criticizing the entire project on the basis of a couple renders.
Frankly, the only design where I can see a "problem" coming up is in the pic of Asuka (well...her ass at least). Obviously there's no actress to base the Asuka scketch on, so its probably being done to show us the plug suit's design, but I'm hoping the thong won't make it into the final design.
This movie is going to be a touchy subject, and I'm sure no matter how faithful it may remain to the original, a large number of people will not be pleased with it. Take Jackson's LOTR films as an example. A great number of people have recognized his achievements in faithfully adapting the books to the screen, while also tweaking the story and visuals to make an exciting (and good) film for those who are new to the story. However, there are still quite a few people who are absolutely horrified at the thought of seeing this happen, and even after seeing the results, complain that it's "fucking bullshit." Whether its the exclusion of a character here (ie, Tom Bombadil), or a tweaking of the storytelling there (ie, "Frodo Lives"), they're unhappy with the result as a whole and overlook any merit the films may have (whether its cinematography, music, costume design, etc.). I can definately see this live-action interpretation of Evangelion falling into the same trap (assuming it is also both faithful to the original and can stand on its own as a good film) simply because it's not "the original."
Then again, one person who has already expressed that opinion to me is also someone who informed me of a "new" movie called The Italian Job.
On a side note, the pic of these is like a month or so old. I'm kinda surprised to see it brought up here now.
EDIT: And Vidiot, Gest's "angry" post seemed more directed at Harry and AICN (and possibly the troll-infested "boards") than the actual content of their article. I can't say I blame him there.
