So, I finally got around to finishing GunBuster, and I found the whole thing rather fantastic. The story was cool and quite original when it was created(1989) and it used Time Dilation as a pretty cool effect. It wasn't uncommon to have a character age 10-15 years in the span of an episode, while his/her peers remained the same age. The ending was cool, in a very weird way, and overall I thought it was a great OVA.

Spoilers...I think (?)
I think the one thing I came away from it wondering was how come Japanese writing hadn't changed in the billion years or however long it was between her departure and arrival again.

It had changed, slightly. The final character in the "Welcome Home" message was backwards.

It's also entirely possible that Japanese was, at that point, a dead language, that they had anticipated their return for the 12,000 years it took them to get back and that the Japanese that was displayed was Jung's way of keeping her promise, even though she wasn't actually there to welcome them. It wouldn't have made sense for them to have displayed it in some new language, or english, even, as the pilots, for who only a few days had passed, wouldn't have understood it.
