Okay.. *I* have not been to Japan, though I too would love to go, but I feel I have to come storming in here and de-spangle the golden idol many people hold Japan juxtaposed to.
My father has been to Japan on several occassions, four times that I can recall. He has stayed in nice hotels, he has stayed in crap districts, and he has stayed in campus housing.
The first thing: You wont be able to afford to eat, unless you don't mind mysterious looking pork on a stick, or noodles in rice broth. Of course, if you have ALOT OF MONEY, you can afford the nummies.
Second thing: It's crowded, and unless you can speak fluent japanese, WITH JAPANESE PEOPLE not just your teacher or friend, yer gunna be lost half the time. Trully. Get used to getting dirty looks, having children run away from you, being yelled at for j-walking across an ALLEYWAY, and shooed for saying "Do you speak english?".
Third thing: The money is confusing, or at least it was to me. You all probably have that math down though. I *still* dont, heh.
Fourth thing: Rent a car. Drive. You'll be sorry if you dont.
If you arent willing to experience the discomforts above, then all you are doing is "sight seeing", and not experiencing Japan... so, why are you going.

Now that that is out of the way... I have wanted to go to Japan for many, many years... I want to stay in a closet-sized room and be a minimalist, eating noodles in rice broth. I want to drive through the "Love Motel" District and visit the thrift stores that sell techno keychains from the 80's with the clock/alarm/pet/datebook/tictactoe in one functions. I wanna live rural, and actually see magic in it because it's Japan, and not Canada. I want to take pictures of kids dressed in painfully colorful clothing from salvation army, and old ladies in pattens smoking cigarettes.
But just for one year.
