the "big eyes" thing was started in anime because they felt that they could get more emotion out if you could put the eyes into it. you can't really do much with the "traditional japanese eye". so i wouldn't really consider it a cliche.

Anyway, my personal pet peeve is the "peace sign" or "victory sign" with two fingers.
