I just got back from the cinema having seen Grave of the Fireflies for the first time. I've never cried so much at a film. This is just a topic to ask 1. do other people like this film or is it just too sad? 2. do other people think Studio Ghibli's films are wonderful too?img>

I would rent it if you can, because I don't think you're going to want to see it more than once. It's one of those films that you could say was harrowing without exaggerating - if you don't like sad films, don't get it. If you want something that is amazing, thought provoking in the extreme but that will make you feel really depressed, get it. I know I cry at films really easily, but after about the first ten minutes of Grave of the Fireflies I was fighting back tears for the rest of the time. Watch it if you want to see an amazing film, but it's definately not the standard Studio Ghibli happy fare.katyjag

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the greatest anime films every created... it touches you in many different ways, granted however mostly in saddening ways...
I'm one of those people who like reality anime that is depressing... because it reminds me of things we should all think about every now and then. I would suggest to anyone, to buy this, but like others who've posted, give that same warning as well... It is not a fun film that you will watch over and over again... it's a film you will watch when you are upset or depressed, and decide to commit that oh so human thing and get yourself more upset or depressed.
I wont deny there are a few out there also -- because I'm one of those people -- who also watch this film because they are touched by the love and care displayed in it, and can accept the ending (well.. begining?) without thinking it ultimately and only an unfair story.
er.. k, enough rambling about this anime... just, one of my favorites... er.. k..

It is one of the greatest films ever made. Grave of the Fireflies is currently one of two anime films on Roger Ebert's Great Movies list, the other one being My Neighbor Totoro.-Spok-

older generations will like that movie more because it reflects how hard life was back in WWII. some of the younger generations wouldn't like it because they dun understand what the movie is trying to say...

Roger Ebert is the short stocky half of Ebert and Roper at the movies (Siskel And Ebert before Gene Siskel died). He's the one they're referring to when you read taglines like "Two thumbs up".
He's also pretty much a closet otaku, since he's one of VERY few film critics in this country who see (and reviews/likes/criticizes) anything animated that's not by Disney or Pixar.

Very nice anime and plot usually have to do alot with nature and the evils of man. I think recently they came up with a new one just cant ... remmeber ... brain not regestring ... noooo ... oh well [shrug]

The new-ish one is Spirited Away (www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/sen/) I think Miyazaki is in to the whole environmental thing, hence it crops up in his films very often, along with aeroplanes! (And there was the whole Totoro forest project, too.) And yeah, the Totoro theme is the best. katyjag
