oh hey um in the (unfortunate) case that the hdd really IS dead, i'll need to buy a new hdd. anyone have any suggestions? i want one that costs less than $150, at least 7200 rpm, and bigger than 60 gig.

oh thats not good, my 2nd hdd died on me 2 weeks ago, i lost only 30gigs of data which isnt that bad (mainly mp3s and musicvids). Anyways, im not sure whats a good suggestion, but i suggest you not to get an IBM - they'r known to have problems after a few months on and i *think* they've even quit the hdd industry, so getting a replacement could be a problem. IBM are the cheapest for the best price, but they'r dodgy. and hd's are prone to dying because they are actually mechanically moving devices, so don't be surprised if your hdd dies every 3 years etc.
i got a new 60g 7200 for like $60AUD . it was a seagate, but i got it alot cheaper because. *tips nose* visit red blog!

hm well i'm on NODE 02 right now, and i don't remember what year i built this, but it has a Pentium II 350 mhz, and that was kickass back then, so that may give you an idea. it has its original 10 gig hdd, and it has been reformatted countless times, with different operating systems: windows 98, me, xp pro, linux redhat, suse, mandrake, and i think even beos once. and this hdd is still running fine.

what IS node 02? i have no idea what it is..
yeah my hd that died recently was a hd i took my my old dedicated box with a 350 also in it.. then about 4 weeks ago it started making really bad humming noises and wouldnt stop reading and then finally it just stopped. i rebooted and tried it on other systems and it wouldnt even power up so there wasnt much i could do to save my data im happy it lasted me around 5-6 yrs?
i think formatting and defragging often is good for the hd, but never the less. the mechanical aspects of a hd will cause it to die earlier than most parts of your pc. i think cdroms are the worse but i doubt many people use them much anymore, its why they recommend you not to read cds with a burner because it can screw it up eventually.
anyways hds are cheap, fast, and big now days. so im sure you wont have too much trouble finding one. make sure it has a good warranty though. visit red blog!

NODE 02 (previously known as GAMMA) is a Pentium II 350 mhz box, the first box ever built by MoonKnight Productions (me).
the prices of hdd's aren't the problem (i'm actually planning on getting a Western Digital 120GB, 8MB Cache, 7200RPM HDD, the WD1200JB). the problem is all of the irreplacable data on Entropy's hdd.
