Just saw it, and still pretty much undecided on it overall. While I certainly enjoyed much of it (although a little puzzled at how Gimli became more of a comic-relief character), I'm still sticking by the first one as the LOTR movie TO SEE at the moment.
I'm sure half of my questions will be cleared up once I discuss it with some friends who've read the books, but it makes it hard to judge the movie on its own if it can't even explain some of the events you're seeing.
And...yah, I guess this is the time to use an old sig here because, yes, Legolas does kick some major ass again.

Aye Jim, it was a bit convoluted (IMO so was the first movie though) for anyone who has never read the book or The Hobbit before. But for anyone who has, so far this movie series as been as perfect a visualization of it as Tolkien himself could have ever imagined. BTW, I love that sig. Nearly fell out of my chair laughing because it's so true.
Vidiot - yup! I was part of that Cinerama at midnight, very tired the next day, crowd...

But I'm not necessarily talking about scenes that referred to events from the books, or different characters and scenes that we are only told of...
*SPOILERS AHEAD. Don't come bitching to me if you read on...*
Take the continuation of the scene between Gandalf and the Balrog (within the first minute or two). After a pretty unbelievable freefalling fight (including a shot that almost looked like it was ripped from Evangelion), there's something that just makes no sense. The two of them fall into a body of water below (I won't even get into the physics of how Gandalf should've been ripped apart by the gravitational forces), and we assume they continue their fight there (although I'd also assume the water would more-or-less extinguish the flames of the Balrog).
But...wait, we then find out that their fight continued on the top of a snowy mountain/cliff? How the hell did Gandalf and the Balrog go from a loooooong free-fall (remember, they were in the mines as a starting point, already well below the surface of the earth) to the TOP of a snowy mountain? Did the two of them decide to make a truce, climb tens of thousands of feet of mountain, and then resume their fight in a more hostile setting? Can you (or anyone) please explain that?
Other stuff like Gandalf's "death" (?) are things that I'm sure the book covers in far greater detail than the film did, as well as probably explicitly explaining what happened as opposed to leaving it as open as Jackson did.
The first one had its moments like that as well, but they seemed to be far less obvious, especially in the extended cut. My biggest problems with the first film had to do with technical reasons, such as the editing, and less with the plot or storytelling (although I had some minor issues with the pacing).
