Can you say.....never?
MiramAxe has already cut it to shreds, and the only chance it'll even see the light of day over here is if it wins the Oscar it was nominated for.
Here's the short version: MiramAxe made a deal with the makers of Hero, and one of the parts of the deal said that they would lose distribution rights to the film if they didn't heavily promote it for the Oscar. They didn't, and instead focused their attention on the Brazilian film "City Of God", which was the early favorite to win in the first place. For some strange reason, City Of God was never even nominated, and instead, Hero surprised pretty much everyone by getting it instead. Of course, MiramAxe still retains the distribution rights.
MiramAxe then had the film cut down from 116 (?) minutes to 98, effectively eliminating 18 minutes of "little" stuff like plot and dialogue. Not surprisingly, just about every negative review I've seen of the movie has been of the 98-minute cut.
So...I really want to see it, and if the new SE DVD that's coming soon is region free (as its supposed to have English subtitles), then I'm going to just pick that up (assuming they don't try to block the sales of it AGAIN), since I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for a proper R1 release. As far as a theatrical release goes, I can only see a LIMITED release of the edited version if it WINS the Oscar.
