The prices went crazy because other idiots think its fun to place $1,000,000 bids on that stuff.

Anyway, while the original auction was started by the one guy in the article, it was mostly Farkers who put up the mock auctions that followed, such as the Chee-to T-Shirt and the "me looking at a picture of the giant chee-to on my computer"-type auction.
