Most Americans speak in a horribly slow drawl so as to not outpace their mental processes. Texans moreso. It's hard enough to process the different pronunciations and speed of other accents in realtime without trying to pinpoint their origins.---

My friend tried to teach me Spanish (more like Latino Spanish) and they said I speak it with an European Spanish accent... how weird is that? So chinese accent turns European...???

The difference is, one group was spawned by regular old English, while the other group came from the violent rejects of British society.

That being said, it depends on what part of American we're talking about. Your average dairy farmer in Vermont wouldn't be able to pinpoint most accents, but your average city guy in New York probably wouldn't have that problem.
