Yes, in England English muffins are just called muffins. And American muffins are just called muffins too. Go figure. o_0
It's not quite as confounding as the issue of what a "biscuit" is though. For weeks I wondered what the deal with American restaurants serving chicken and cookies was...

But.. muffins and english muffins are two completely different baked goods... how does that work. Just from like blueberry or bran? So if you just say muffin, and nothing else, you get a soggy closed scone instead of an open one?
As to the continuing saga of eggs benedict.. one of the best places to get them in toronto (unless its not there anymore) is Mr Karass's in the beaches (called just Karass now I think). But, shy of a restaurant, just make it at home, or wherever there is a friend's kitchen. It's a special breakfast at my house, reserved for occassions with Lisa... I just use a powder hollandaise sauce mix thingy (it still takes a whole stick of butter though), some back bacon, [english] muffins, and poaches eggs. I poach the eggs in a teflon pan filled with water, a slit saucer spoon, and a hint of vinegar.

You don't really eat English muffins and American muffins in the same context in England, so people generally know which one you mean from when you're asking for it. American muffins aren't a breakfast food in England, but English muffins are. And if that doesn't make it clear enough we do ocassionally call American muffins "American muffins" in exactly the same way that you call our ones "English". ^_^
And yeah, if you ask for a chocolate/blueberry/bran muffin it's pretty clear you're not asking for an English muffin cause they're not flavoured (except occasionally with cheese). ^_^
