Miso Soup
Have you guys seen this movie? I've seen it twice, and still have mixed emotions. It seems to be getting alot of rave reviews or very bad ones.
Opinions?

My friends went to see it, I couldn't because of stupidass stupid work (it was either go to the cinema and miss dinner at the restaurant or vice versa -_-) and they appeared to be somewhat ambivalent about it too.
...but other than that I dunno. ^_^

I think this movie is part of the entire "Asian culture is cool and wacky!" fad that's sweeping our nation. Like all fads, this one will hopefully die quickly. not allowed

Sofia Coppola, like many actors and directors, has first-hand experience in pitching products (usually their movies) in Japan. Where there are some examples of what you're referring to (the "lip my stockings!" scene being an obvious one), most of the movie simply deals with Bob and Charlotte's relationship, leaving Japan is nothing more than an interesting backdrop to it. And the parts that
do directly involve the Japanese (such as Bob's commercials) are fairly accurate.

Mulligan? I'm not sure. Anyhoo, I'm going from what I've seen in the trailers, and they've pretty much painted it as a wacky romantic comedy with the comedic parts filled by japanese who are comedic because Americans don't understand them. WACKY.not allowed

In a way, that's how the movie is, but it's certainly not the focus of it. Some scenes (such as the karaoke one) may give that impression to some people, but again, it's a fairly accurate representation of it.

It was a very wide genre film. I found that some people came in for a romance flick, alot of people walked in expecting comedy, and some Japanese people brought thier family along for maybe another depiction of what westerners think of thier home country, and some googly feelings of home town.
The romance isn't in a nice little package however. Bob is married and perhaps some audiences feel he is on the verge of cheating with Charlotte and the end *may* surprise you. It had a nice ending, something you could think about for a little while, but it wouldn't make your head combust.
Alot of the comedy was 'fish out of water' based. Something you may or may not like. I found all the jokes mildly amusing, but I wasn't in there for a Comedy film anyhow. The audiences found the jokes funny though, I know a few Japanese couples were snickering away throughout the whole movie about something...
Watching the film did give me good memories of trips to Japan. And a bit of wanting to go back to see how much it has changed and how quickly. Lets all go to Japan eh.
Alot of the film was set in the bar where Bob spent most of his time during his trip in Japan. These scenes were the best, the movie is worth a watch.
