The little bit of digging I did reaped that the only person from the konami team involved in the Silent Hill movie is the composer (which granted, is spiffycakes, because honestly I think the music played a huge part in SH2's freakiness)... And it looks like the story is kind of like SH1, with lots of SH2 elements.
This is probably old news to all of you, but I didn't see it brought up here yet.. so, well anyway.. the tv trailers I've seen so far look kind of ok... I won't be going to the theatre to see it (I.. uhm, I'm a scaredy cat, hehe).
So... who predicts this will fall into the same doomed (haha, Doom.. get it?) pit that most other VG movies do, and who doesn't?

He's more than just the composer.
I'm nervously hopeful. I've been following it for a while, but for each plus (Pyramid Head) there's some questionableness ("I am the Reaper").

I think it probably has the best chance at being a game-to-film adaptation that doesn't suck, but like Drak said, I have some reservations as well.
However, I do plan on bringing a fork with me to the theater, just in case I need to stab some jackhole who decides to be a comedian with quips like, "One does not simply run away from Pyramid Head!"

Ya ya ya.. he produced SH3, conceived/directed the room.. or something like that... but from what I read he's only doing the score for the film.
The glimpse of pyramid head in one of the trailers makes me happy, and worried, at the same time. I dunno how he could possibly be incorporated into any story that doesn't involve the character of James, unless origin and concept is completely ignored. And I dunno if that would entirely suck or not... guess I have to wait and see.

It is my friends opinion that, once the composer got involved as more than just the composer, the games started to suck. :-* not allowed

Ya.. I haven't played SH3 or the room.. but I read reviews that they just weren't as good.
Infact wasn't the room supposed to originally be a totally seperate game unrelated to silent hill? I'm sure its pretty, and I like the basic concept of crawling through holes to get to different places... sorta alice in wonderland.. ish...but anyway...

It was good.
Would've been infinitely better without the retarded couple sitting right next to me laughing at everything and carrying on idiotic conversations. Debated seriously whether to drink the extra-tall can of coconut milk I'd smuggled in or leave it filled so it would function better as a bludgeon.
The movie has its drawbacks. It's not scary, for one. Darkness isn't used nearly effectively enough. It also wasn't as gory as I'd expected. SH isn't about the gore, of course, but previews had had me expecting something a lot more visceral. Maybe I'm just jaded. Or maybe I was pulled out of it by the laughing brain damage to my left. I ended up drinking the milk.
The creatures are by and large pretty memorable, though through sheer visual impact rather than any raison d'tre. They're a tip of the hat to fans, along with some choice camera angles, place names, a whole segment about fifteen minutes in that actually worked really well. The nurses are as hot as ever, though one of the ones up front in the group betrays her dancer background by putting a bit too much cabaret in her walk. Try to find her! Acting was decent, it was the dialogue that sometimes hampered things, if anything. Sean Bean and everything related to him was completely superfluous. At times I wasn't sure if a scene wasn't working perfectly because of direction, Heckle and Jeckle, or an increasing pressure on my bladder.
There's a rather awkward backstory segment past the midpoint of the film, narrated entirely by the little girl. Normally I can't stand child actors, but she holds her own fairly well. Incidentally, the "I am the reaper" line from the trailer was taken completely out of context and raped in post-processing. Whoever did that unquestionably put off a good chunk of potential viewers and should be shot for stupidity. Along with the loudmouthed morons to my left.
Story-wise, my first thought after the movie was over was that everything seemed very cut and dried and I had no idea why all these reviews were whining about obtuseness. Then I started remembering some throwaway scenes and lines that started clashing with each other. Maybe this is hidden depth. Right now it's just striking me as plot holes and dropped plot lines. There's the possibility that some of this was explained in the five or ten minutes of penultimate scene dialogue I missed when I jumped out of the 125-minute movie to piss out the coconut milk. I wonder if the couple thought I'd gone to see the manager and shut the @#%$ up for a minute. I doubt it.
In the end, this probably is one of the better game adaptations out there. It's reasonably true to the game without being campy, with plenty of fan-service combined with some new ideas, though the two don't always add up to a sum greater than its parts. I unstuck my shoes from the floor and filed out, wondering why I don't go out and enjoy the social movie theater experience more often.
Edit: Fun tidbit: "Parts of Silent Hill were shot in Downtown Brantford, Ontario, once named the worst downtown in all of Canada. The film has gotten the community thinking that their city core is terribly that bad to be having a horror movie shot in town."

LOL, I remember hearing about that concerning the town.. and how they did some stupid press release saying rebuilding was in the works, but they are part of a county or something, and so it "takes a little time". I didn't know Ontario HAD counties. Anyway..
So, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the most awesome thing evar? I'm not a hard to please movie goer. I liked Resident Evil 2 (okay granted, because they totally trashed my city hall, and it was fun playing the "I've been there!" game), so that should say something I guess.
So it wasn't like "seat jumping" scary? Good.. I mean, good for me... was there a psychological freakiness to it though atleast?

Psychological freakiness? Hm...well, I suppose there's a bit toward the end and during the first exploration of the town. I don't think there was ever a real overarching sense of dread or wonder, or any question about the nature of the goings-on. In the game, there's the feeling that the main character may be dreaming or insane. In the movie, this is almost entirely nonexistent, boiling it down to more of a standard monster movie.
