So I recently created a gmail account because I been having problems accessing my hotmail. I kept getting some redirect error trying to login, using any know login domain. Even when I try to access my hotmail via live account login, I get the same crap. Figures it works in IE though.
Anyways, everyone recommended gmail to me saying how it was god and everything and how it so owns hotmail. So I go to created an account.
No, I cannot use robin@gmail.com, because you need at least 6 charcters. robink, robinrk, robin.k are taken. No underscores are allowed. So I am stuck with using my full first and last name. Ok, so I make an account.
I heard all the hype about how amazing gmail's webmail is and how it blows hotmail anyways. Well now I can say those people are MS haters spreading their FUD.
Ok first, the spam filter. Why can't I turn off the spam filter? What kind of service FORCES the spam filter on you? When I transfered my hotmail emails to my gmail, about 10 emails were put in the spam folder (none which resembled spam). A spam filter which I have no control over or able to configure the rules for does me no good when I want to use pop access. What is the point if I have to check the webmail to see if any important mail hit the spam box?
Second, the label filters. They do not act like a priority filtering system like hotmail (like they should). They apply all filters to all emails allowing for multi labels per email. This fails to emulate the organization of folders. I want to separate different domains to different folder with exceptions to certain address (which are more frequent than others) which are giving dedicated folders. But with gmail, it will give a dedicated label, plus any other matching filters causing them to mix in with all the other emails in the same domain. Sure I COULD setup the filters on a per full address bias, but why should I have to? This is more complicated and I would have to create them each time I get a email from a new address.
Also treading. It cannot be disabled. Which is stupid (I don't like them). Another preference decided for you by google. I don't want my emails treaded together, it makes browsing and finding specific email for painful for me.
Also the image blocker cannot be disabled. Another preference decided for you by google (or at least the option in the setting regarding images doesn't actually do anything for me).
So what I am saying is, hotmail's webmail is better than gmail's.

I've been using gmail for at least a year now. I love it.
The way the spam filter works is you have to teach it what is and isn't spam. Maybe once a month (if that) I get a false positive, but other than that it works great.
