Yah, but Schumacher is an ass, isn't he?
Besides its really not all that strange if some mid-western cop doesn't recognize him, F1 racing isn't too big in the US, and only NASCAR seems to draw a big crowd here.

I'll never understand the draw with nascar...it's even more boring than F1 is at present....

haha this just reminded me, if you guys are ever in the orange county/los angeles area, there's a station called KROQ (the World Famous KROQ as they say) and they have this morning show called Kevin & Bean, and sometimes they do this thing where people call in telling their stories about "Do you know who I am?" as in meeting celebrities in everyday life and hearing them say "Do you know who I am?" it's hilarious haha

but the thing is, nigel mansell is a very famous F1 racer too. albeit he is.. the LAST era. i guess the cop hasn't gotten with the times yet, man.

That's exactly what was so stupid about the comment! The cop compared him to Nigel Mansell, so he obviously knew something about F1..
Nigel Mansell retired in the early 90s, so there isn't much of a time difference between the careers of Mansell and Schumacher!

But he's probably a more recognized name in the US among those who aren't that sports-savy, especially for anyone over 20. The average American probably wouldn't know who Rusty Wallace is (then again, your "average American is probably a Bible-beating southerner, so he just might ), but they probably know Mario Andretti, simply due to the exposure the name has recieved over time.
*Note* I'm not a racing fan and probably know less than anyone else here about the sport. Sorry, two hours of left turns don't do it for me.
