Oh, you want "sick" eh? Think about what Dysney could do for the remake of FF7?:

      Death of Aries...Disney style:
Cloud: "No! Darn! Why did you do a bad thing Sephiroth?"
Sephiroth: "Do not be sad, dont cry..."
Cloud: "Be quite! Dont interupt me! Thats bad!"
Barret: "What the 'h'-'e'-'double hockey sticks'!!!"
      Tifa: "Lets learn our mistakes!"
Sephiroth: "Ha! I am a bad person! I dont want to!"
-Sephiroth frolicks around singing a song:
"I am a bad boy! I put away Aries! She cant talk anymore...tra-la-la-la!"

Squaresoft is making grounds on the US video game market, but not deep enough. The executives probably think the select community of otakus just isn't big enough to justify their marketing efforts. They need big US names like Columbia and Disney to penetrate into the American heartland. Even "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" needed Columbia to bring it to American cinemas.
And now this joint partnership move is all the more necessary, what with xenophobia among Americans on the rise.

Well, I wouldn't exactly cause it xenophobia, since its not really a fear or hatred of foriegners, just people of Islamic religions and Middle Eastern descent.
But you've absolutely right. I LOVED two films that came out of China last year, both extremely excellen in their own ways. CTHD was picked up by Columbia, and In The Mood For Love was picked up by nobody. CTHD ended up making a ton of money at the box office, as well as a few oscars. ITMFL got nothing. No press, no exposure, and no money.
Besides, they could be trying to introduce the concept of RPGs to people who are under 12, an audience that Final Fantasy, Ultima, or Dragon Warrior/Quest doesn't happen to reach well at all.

                      >I hate the name...Look a Flying Elephant!!!
The name happens to be a literal translation of the title of the Chinese book on which the film is based.
Some trivia: "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon" is a Chinese idiom used to describe hidden talents or concealed danger.
