Looks like Final Fantasy screwed you pal.
Let's take a gander at all the first rooms on the Playstation Final Fantasys.
Final Fantasy VII - Cloud jumps off the train and you are ready to begin your adventure. A big black guy motions for you to follow him out of the 'room'. Although the big black man is a hint on where to go, you are forced into a fight and must remember exactly where you are going when you get back to the first room screen. Although some people have memorization problems, this first room is fairly easy to navigate.
First Room Difficulty: Easy
Final Fantasy VIII - The first room is a classroom. Although gamers undoubtbably hate classrooms and have a hard time getting out of them as it is, with a little practice you will be able to get out of this one fairly quickly. Simply run to the front of the room and exit. For bonus points talk to the four girls that are there to further immerse yourself in the gameworld.
First Room Difficulty: Medium
Final Fantasy IX - This first room poses the greatest challenge because you are given two options. You can go backwards, or forwards. Also, some gamers might be disorientated by the flying sea gulls blocking your view ahead. Furthermore, your character trips! And to some, looks like a gay. Some 'hardcore' rpg players who started with VIII and with most likely end with VIII may be put off by the colorful game world and uniquely designed characters. This is truly a game that a first room master must conquer.
First Room Difficulty: Hard

I think it was IX, BTW the first room in FIX was dark and you had to light up the lantern in the middle of the room, not like you said.
