FFVII is cool and a lot of people think it's the best of the lot, the graphics *might* seem a bit dated to some people cause it was made something like four years ago now. (I have just started playing it again though, and I still love it...play that game if only to see Sephiroth! ) FFVIII is favourite even though some people say that it's not got enough in common with other FF games and it's too much of a love story. FFIX is good in its own way, but it didn't really do much for me. It's meant to be more of a "proper" FF game cause it has more of the medieval elements to it, where as the previous two are kinda industrial/futuristic.

Just a suggestion. If nothing else, play FFVII first. It is considered one of the best (perhaps other than FFVI) in the series. The addictive gameplay should get you asking for more of the FF series.
However, if you like mush and/or movies, make FFVIII your first FF game instead. The CG movies -- especially the beginning and the ending -- should blow your mind away. (They did for me, and they still do.) No female FF character has ever left a deeper impression than Rinoa had in me (yes, not even Aeris).

          FFVIII DEFINATELY FFVIII!!!!
Though FFVII is good FFVIII is still better (in my opinion that is ^^').
Also FFVIII is easier to learn then FFVII (again that's my opnion).
          bottomline: FFVIII!!!

FFVIII does have style, like, seriously. It's just the classiest videogame I've ever seen. Possibly FFX might top it, but VIII is still really cool. The in-game graphics are maybe a little bit dated now too, but the FMV is so stunning. If anything, just download the start from the CHV Bar or something and watch that. It might make up your mind as to whether you want to play it or not.

Okay.. I uhm, dont want to insult snipper by diverting people from the CHV bar.. but if yer telling someone to go get the opening FMV for FFVIII, then go to the official square page and download the FULLSCREEN binked version. Or, hey, go get the PC demo...
Actually, yes, thats my advice, Hey, go get the PC demo of FFVIII from download.com or square or, where ever. Before you decide to rent or buy, try the demo... wait, maybe THATS the game you tried where you got stuck in the first room... I think the demo starts you off right before the ball, when you're supposed to change your clothes..
Okay, here's the deal, if this is where you were stuck.. the exit from the room is at the bottom of the screen, over to the right. Go through the open door at the back-right first, and change to your formal attire though.

ok. that sounds like where i was stuck at the beginning of the game .. but it was not a demo .. i had rented the game .. and there was a chick in the room .. i think and there was something about a party that i couldnt figure out and there was no way to leave the room .. i tried moving down to the bottom of the screen .. walking in all corners .. hitting buttons .. nothing was working .. DAMN THAT ROOM! it was broken or something. and the options and stuff was confusing to me. i just had no patience and didnt bother reading the handbook for help with the conrols.

get it again and figure it out, it's worth it...REALLY
but you might want to buy/borrow/beg/steal it, cos FFs are long and involving...

Ren was right. That IS the starting scenario of the FFVIII demo. And Selphie is the name of the chick telling you about the graduation party. Go into your own room with the SeeD graduation outfit and change into it. Then leave.
If you're playing the full game though, you should not even start from your own room. Instead you should be in the infirmary with an old chick called Dr Kadowaki. But that's another story. D">

Go inside the room (without the chick) , X the bed , and the option to change to the outfit should appear . Then go back where you came from the edge of the screen and you will appear in the room you were in (with the chick) X the chick and you can continue with the game .aThe beginning of Eternity, the end of Time ...b
