Where to begin....
Ok, first off, I was going to say that this one would be shorter than the last two posts, but I'm not promising anything since today was REALLY nice (and that's knowing that the best part has yet to come).
Ok, got there early, yadda yadda yadda. I shoot some video, I play some games, things go on (see, I can wrap up a few hours in just a few lines!

).
I'm filming the Warcraft III displays over at Blizzard's booth, and the PR rep that I had tried (unsuccessfully) to contact for the past few weeks. He see's my media badge and me filming, and decides to stop me. Not to be a hard-ass about letting me film, but he offered to send me some B-Roll footage of the game. Great! So, thanks to Beau over at Blizzard for starting things going in the right direction.
SEGA!!!
The past two days, I was turned down at Sega's booth, where maybe 150 people were gathered outside, and maybe 15-20 people were inside. I had an appointment with them at 12:30, and hoped I would get to see
something. Well, my prayers had been answered.
Inside the Sega booth (which I now had access to) were maybe 20 displays, showing everything like:
PSO v.2 (DC)
Shenmue II (DC) [YES!]
Virtua Fighter 4 (Arcade)
Sega Sports Tennis 2K2 (DC) [Note: This IS the sequel to Virtua Tennis, which kicked major ass)
PSO (GC)
JSRF (XBox)
Crazy Taxi 2 (eh...DC I think)
and a few others.
So I'm talking with the rep, and filming some displays, and things are going nice. I filmed the entire NEW Shenmue II trailer off the display, which wasn't great quality since it was a handheld camera shot, of a tv screen (through glass), on a vhs tape, recorded from a DC. So, trying my luck, I asked if I could get some B-Roll footage of Shenmue II, and possibly anything else. BAM! Within minutes, the very polite rep from Sega handed me a beta tape with the direct feed vids from all the games in the booth (i.e.: everything the public wasn't able to see).
Cool. Add that to the fact that this was all in a nice lounge-type setting, complete with some funky music and a catering staff, serving beverages and "10th Anniversary Sonic" pieces of cake. Sweeeeeeet.
Yadda yadda, yadda...I decide to go around asking for more b-roll footage, hoping I can get some REALLY cool stuff for CHV. After all, we ARE promoting the games by showing this stuff to you, and if we're going to promote anything, we might as well have it in the highest quality possible. In the end, I got a few more tapes from various companies such as Rockstar/GOD/Take 2 (Max Payne), Midway (NHL Hitz 2002), Microsoft (Halo, Oddworld), and Nintendo (Smash Bros. 2, Metroid Prime, Mario Kart Advance). So, things went pretty good in that respect.
BUT....since I wanted the highest quality possible, I got all of these on BetacamSP tapes, and since I do not have IMMEDIATE access to a beta player, it'll be a little bit before I can offer this stuff to you guys (or for that matter, watch it myself).
Anyways, things were a lot more detailed and complex than that, but I'm out of time for now. So, for the last time, this is Jim (a.k.a. Ed) signing off from E3 2001.
