Well, I'd recommend calling it soccer while you're here (assuming it actually comes up in conversation), simply so people know what you're talking about.
And unless you plan on staying...well...forever, expect any accent to stick around for a long time.

Everyone calls it American Football here anyway. I've never really understood why though...there doesn't seem to be half as much foot involved as soccer football.
