Hope everyone enjoys this about Rockin Rafter P Bucking Bulls, a Member of the board :)

We would like to congratulate them on this past seasons success!!

1. I recently saw the results of the UBBI National Derby Finals held in Wichita, KS and the ABBI Lifetime Derby held in Las Vegas, NV and wanted to congratulate you, CJ, and your wife Kathy, on your winning derby bull, Smooth Operator. You guys must be very proud of him. Share with us some of your thoughts on that, if you wouldn’t mind:

Yes, we are certainly very proud of Smooth Operator and his claiming the UBBI Co-Reserve National Finals Championship and, by doing that, he also became the year end UBBI Reserve National Champion money winner as well. He then followed that up with a 5th place finish out in Vegas at the ABBI Lifetime Derby. As you would imagine, he was up against some of the best bulls in the country in these events and he stepped it up when it really counted. He has really turned things around here at the end of the season winning right at $40,000 this year. He almost topped last year’s futurity winnings of Fire for Effect, his half-brother. I think FFE won about $45,000 last year.

2. Well it certainly sounds like you guys have got Rockin Rafter P Bucking Bulls rolling pretty good now. How long have you been doing this and how did you get started in this business?

Well, thank you, we hope we can keep it going and we hope it will be even better next year. We started off in this business back in 2007 by partnering on a 4 year old classic bull owned by Gene Owen. Our website home page covers our story in more, but to make a long story short, I believe, from that hot July night when Dirty White Bull II beat out the great Troubadour and won the ABBI classic in Weatherford, Texas, I was hooked. From there, we put together a base of about 5 direct daughters on the top and bottom of PBR finals and champion bulls and started raising our own and first thing you know we also made a purchase of some land to raise them on. Today we are up to around 23 heifers and cows culling hard and still sticking, as much as possible, to our original plan of PBR quality direct daughters.

3. What are some of your major bloodlines?

On the maternal side, we have Cat Daddy, Dr. Hou, Houdini, Shanghai, Little Yellow Jacket, Little Weed, Big Bucks, Sky King, Lost in Paradise, Boding, Mission Pack, Gold Coast Sheriff, Skat Kat, and Reindeer Dippin

On the Paternal Side, we have Reindeer Dippin, Gigolo, Last Call, Skat Kat, Cooter, Oscar’s Velvet, Houdini, Apollo, Moody Blues, Up in Smoke

4. How many head do you run and where are you located?

We only run 23 cows/heifers and 14 bulls at this time. We’re just a small operation but we like to think we pack a pretty big punch. Most of our female herd are located in South Central OK, just outside of Paoli, OK and our bulls are located near Sulphur, OK.

5. What circuits and events do you compete in? What plans do you have for the future?

We concentrate on futurities, derbies, classic’s, bull teams and maturities of the ABBI, UBBI and NBBA. Our bull talent, each year, kind of dictates where we go and what we compete in. Our plan for the future is to grow our herd, keep our genetics up, and win, win, win with our bulls. We really couldn’t do this and be as successful as we have been without the great cattle expertise and hard work of our trainer/ handler, John Donaho, who works with our bulls and the “fearless one”, Frank Newsom, who keeps our maternal herd and young calves in beautiful shape all year round. We are very blessed to have these two cowboy gentlemen working with us. Kathy and I thank them so much.

6. What are you the most proud of so far?
Well, that’s a pretty easy one, Marcia. I would have to say I’m very proud of Fire for Effect’s accomplishments as a futurity calf in 2012 and the kind of year that Smooth Operator had in 2013 as a derby bull. But quite frankly, it really makes me feel good to be able to say that these calves were both bred and raised on my place by our organization.
7. What guidance would you offer those out there that would like to get into this business and have a fair amount of success as you guys have?

Well, first off I don’t look at myself as an expert by any means, but I know what I have learned the hard way and I would recommend the following:

• If you want to get started in this business, I don’t care whether you already have a ranch set up or not, learn this business from partnering with someone who has been there and learned the hard way.
• Ask a lot of questions and read all the magazines you can find someone who will mentor you.
• Do not be tempted to buy 10 cows for $500 a round unless you are aspiring to sell your calves by the pound. With that $5000, go buy you two yearling heifers with great top and bottom pedigrees out of a great producing sire and dam.
• Whenever you come to a crossroads and a difficult decision has to be made, concentrate on thinking things through and making the right decision
• Plan your work and work your plan, it’s that simple.

8. You have a website don’t you?

Yes, we do, www.rockinrafterpranch.com Kathy built it and maintains it and that is a job in itself, as you know. She does a great job with it. We share a lot of videos of the bulls wining and placing at events and we also have a neat video of all the famous bulls that competed in that Weatherford classic event back in 2007 that I spoke of. Every time I look at that video, there’s just something about it that fuels the fire inside.

Again congratulations!!
