<::: PLEASE READ

Egg ... citing News.

The BC nest of .. K-76/m & A-32/f .. has TWO eggs .. laid March 7th and March 10th.

The FP nest of .. A-64/m & A-49/f .. now has :^: :^: :^: on their nest.

The SC nest of .. A-40/m & A-48/f .. now has :^: :^: :^: on their nest.

The WE nest of .. K-01/m & K-91/f .. now has :^: and ONE egg. Unfortunately the first egg, laid February 8th, was non-viable.

The adults will be taking turns brooding the chicks and incubating the eggs. Normally during this time, or at a switch, the eggs will also be rolled. This is to prevent the developing embryos/chicks from sticking to the inside of the shells.

While IWS is interested in the above information, and would be especially interested in knowing if an adult leaves the nest and the eggs are uncovered for a while, Dr. Sharpe has indicated in the past that he also wants us to simply enjoy the experience of watching all the happenings on the nests and learn more about these magnificent birds through the wonder of the Nest Cams.

Therefore, please continue to post observations in the usual way, but should you observe a parent switch or notice that the adult is not on the nest, it would be helpful to all of us if the time(s) could also be noted/posted .. along with whatever else you observe happening on the nest at that time.

Times of events/changes on a nest are a great help to those of us who video when we are editing the footage.

Just a few Gentle Reminders about posting on this thread. (Helps to save time when reading through it.)

Please remember that it is the CHANNEL ISLANDS NESTS ONLY .. either on or off camera .. that we post our observations/comments about.

There are FIVE IWS nests with cameras online .. so it is important to know WHICH NEST you are observing.

Please put the Initials at the start of your post.

These nests are all in California ... so it's Pacific Time on this coast.

We prefer that the Quote Button is not used on this thread ... and if you must use it ... because you are referring to something on a previous page ... then take TEXT only ... never captures or video.

Thanks!

“A request from Dr. Sharpe”
Eagle Guy,Mar 28 2011 wrote:We are recording the activity at the Two Harbors and West End nests so that we can identify all the prey brought to the nests to calibrate the results of the nest excavations at the end of the season. I'd appreciate if you could continue to report the times that prey are brought to the nest so that later we can go through the recordings more quickly to identify the items. Thanks.
Eagle Guy,Mar 28 2011 wrote:Maybe prey delivery posts could be started with >>: even if it is a bird or unidentified, so that we can spot them more easily.
To make it easier for the biologists to see the prey deliveries, please limit the use of the blue fish to prey deliveries only.

Begin your post with the nest initials, followed by the time of delivery & the blue fish.

Eagle Guy,May 12 2011 wrote:We are recording prey deliveries at all the online nests, so please continue to use the blue fish for deliveries at any nest.
Thank you!

FP 3.57
A49 stepped to the right and stood on the 3 and up to the branches. SWITCH. A64 stood on the 3 for a spell

4.03
A64 picks up a fish and takes it to the 9. Then looks down at the chicks

4.09
He takes a fish to the 6 to start a feeding, it's too early, chicks sleep.

4.14
He broods to the 11

4.38
A64 steps to the rear of the bowl and sifts through the fluff

4.41
He moves to the bowl at 10, to stand over the chicks

4.49
He moves to the 9 and stands over the bowl, then spots a mouse? or are there chicks out of the bowl. IDK, I can't tell. A64 didn't seem upset

4.51
I'll wait until the view is clear, as I see movement all over

5.20
Now mice gather at the 3, A64 leans toward them, one moves to the 5, A64 near the 8..........still not sure who is in or out of the bowl

A64 is doing wing slaps all over. The mice are everywhere. In front of him, behind him, to the right, but too fuzzy to see anything clearly

6.39
A49 comes to the nest and cries. A64 heads for the branches. SWITCH

6.40
A49 moves in and begins to feed. She feeds #3 a piece and #1 threatens. A49 continues to feed #3.

6.41
#1 turns around to #2 and pecks it down for no reason, then turns back to the feeding.

This chick is so mean, the others are afraid to eat, even when it is offered

6.43
#2 peeps and peeps, but stays down behind #1. #3 now being fed. Looks like #1 has had its fill ??

6.44
#2 rises, but still behind #1

6.45
Mom begins to offer #2 a bite, the chicks rears back to the other side. How sad

FP 6.54
A49 begins to settle in. #1 gets below her breast, beats down #2, then turns and beats down #3, over and over

6.56
Now they all build a pile in front of her. #1 has the best seat of course, #3 still trying to push in closer

I've seen a lot of beat downs by chicks, but this one takes the cake

SC .. just brought the cam up and see chicks are home alone.

Last night at 11:55pm .. the Owl hit A-48 on her head again.

Had already signed off but was doing a quick check through on the other computer so saw it on there.

Wonder if this nest is a normal hunting area for the deer mice in the off season?

FP .. this is the clearest I have seen this nest.

Wonder if they had the same problem with the eldest of the triplets last season .. they were all boys .. maybe this #1 is a girl? Would also account for the size difference.
