I watched the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" last night, and found it surreal and a bit odd... although much better than the original "Planet of the Apes" remake disaster.
As I was watching, movies like "Green Lantern", "Captain America", "X-Men", "Batman", "Robin Hood", "Prince of Persia", "King Kong", "Transformers" (do I need to go on?) came to mind.
It seems like they are remaking things that were (well, just very fond memories) and putting them out there for us to consume... but despite all the effects, it's just falling short, either right away or after a sequel or two or three or.....!
When will someone come up with something new?
Or am I missing something here? Are there new things that I haven't seen?
I don't like what they're doing to the classic stuff - the effects might be there, but I usually find myself wanting the original story, with the cheesy effects.
Or maybe I'm off here? I'm getting up in years... is this the first sign of grumpy old man???
I think it's a matter of fear actually, they don't dare try anything new these days. I mean, really, how many big Hollywood movies these days are not based on best-selling books or comics? Inception is about the only one that comes to my mind, but there they had a really famous director and a whole bunch of superstar actors..
Most of the interesting and innovative movies (as American movies go) come from the indie scene it seems, like Winter's Bone for example, or Donnie Darko for that matter, even though that was a few years ago.
