I watched the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" last night, and found it surreal and a bit odd... although much better than the original "Planet of the Apes" remake disaster.

As I was watching, movies like "Green Lantern", "Captain America", "X-Men", "Batman", "Robin Hood", "Prince of Persia", "King Kong", "Transformers" (do I need to go on?) came to mind.

It seems like they are remaking things that were (well, just very fond memories) and putting them out there for us to consume... but despite all the effects, it's just falling short, either right away or after a sequel or two or three or.....!

When will someone come up with something new?

Or am I missing something here? Are there new things that I haven't seen?

I don't like what they're doing to the classic stuff - the effects might be there, but I usually find myself wanting the original story, with the cheesy effects. :D

Or maybe I'm off here? I'm getting up in years... is this the first sign of grumpy old man???

I think it's a matter of fear actually, they don't dare try anything new these days. I mean, really, how many big Hollywood movies these days are not based on best-selling books or comics? Inception is about the only one that comes to my mind, but there they had a really famous director and a whole bunch of superstar actors..

Most of the interesting and innovative movies (as American movies go) come from the indie scene it seems, like Winter's Bone for example, or Donnie Darko for that matter, even though that was a few years ago.
"All disasters stem from us. Why is there war? Perhaps because now and then I might be inclined to snap at my neighbour. Because I and my neighbour and everyone else do not have enough love. Yet we could fight war and all its excrescences by releasing, each day, the love that is shackled inside us, and giving it a chance to live."

There is still lots of new ideas (Inception anyone?) but also remakes because if it worked once, it probably will work again. I am not in the remake hating camp (anyone remember Scarface and The Fly?) but I do find it silly at times, such as the Spiderman remake. Yes, a remake already.

I had forgotten about Inception... truly good stuff. :) And the end continues to bend my mind in somewhat painful ways :(

Was Scarface a remake? I had no idea about that....

Spiderman can't be remade already, can it?

The one with that Peter Parker actor that no one likes (I'm terrible with actor/actress names) is being remade already?
