Wow, wow and wow.  I'm not a fan personally, but I know quite a few older folks who are regulars.  Just wow.

My in-laws are gonna miss it and my wife when she has a cold has me pick up chicken soup from there. Last time I was there the food and service was good but the place smelled like a damp musty basement.

It really was a good place to take elders and kids.  And there was a time or two when I met peeps there for breakfast for the purpose of being able to sit in a back booth and have a conversation that would not be picked up by the Glosta breakfast joint express, lol.

That would be a great spot for a pizza and sub shop.

Their biggest mistake was stopping to serve the crinkle cut fries! crinkle-fries.jpg

Is the Chinese restaurant next door closed also?  From something posted on FaceBook it sounded like it was but I don't know if this info is correct.

The Jasmine Garden re-opens 4/1/18.  It must be a seasonal liquor license.

Their other restaurant “Ocean Garden” on Maplewood remains open.

... and good bye Friendlys - some of the best deals for cheap eats.

I couldn’t find CONFIRMATION OF THE CLOSING. I did find a request for an associate manager at Gloucester Friendly’s - posted 19 days ago.

Maybe it’s still open.

My kids loved that place when they were little...ice cream guaranteed at the end of the meal!  Does anyone know how long they've been there?  I remember going with my dad growing up once in awhile and with my friends after bowling candlepins.  Once we even stopped in after the prom all dressed up just for fun.  Sad to see them leave.

Remember the store that existed at the Friendly's site?
It must have closed 1978-ish, with Friendly's starting up right after.

I was there a lot in the mid-70's with my friends...it was like Happy Days a couple decades later.

I had totally forgotten about Brooks but yes...it was there at the same time as Friendly's for awhile I think.  I have a photo from mid-70's of RHS kids hanging out inside Friendly's...that's what made me think of Happy Days...they looked just like that!

Contractors are taking down the Friendly's sign on Washington Street right now. So sad.

Such an exciting outing when the kids were little. Like going to Disneyland.

Clearly it's a Friendly's issue.

Same stories, no notice, same signs on the doors:

From what I remember, the plaza opened in the early 70's.  Friendly's was just an ice cream place, there was some type of drug store (not sure if they had a pharmacy) in the middle and China Port on the end (immediately stopping our trips to beverly for Chinese food!!)
You think you know it, but you haven't got a clue!!

"One employee in Westfield told The Republican she received no notice of the closing.

Friendly's tries to notify employees 24 to 48 hours before a closing, said Bill Chiccarelli, spokesman for the restaurant chain. But some employees might not have heard until the day of the closing because they were not scheduled to work, he said.

All the employees in Westfield and Gloucester were offered jobs at other Friendly's locations, Chiccarelli said. But he acknowledged that the Gloucester employees might not be able to take those jobs because the closest locations are in Peabody, about 18 miles away, or Saugus, about 25.

The two shutdowns were not related, he said, other than that the restaurants were underperforming. The Gloucester location is hard to get in and out of, and the Westfield Shops location suffered once the drive-thru went in at the location by the Mass. Pike, he said."

I forget the story, but it wasn't long ago that a new owner took over something like 22 Friendly's stores. Apparently the Gloucester location wasn't pulling it's weight despite long-time regulars. I find that surprising.
