I am looking for a nice WW2 Royal Canadian Navy ratings uniform to add to my collection. I understand there were a variety of different combinations of dress for RCN ratings (depending on the situation, climate, etc.). Ideally, I would like to locate a blue serge jumper with blue denim detachable collar, as well as a white flannel short-sleeved shirt. I already have several wartime dated RCN caps, but am finding the other RCN uniform items to be more difficult to locate. Once again, any leads would be appreciated.

Craig,
If you wish to obtain period era RCN items then try "Sabre Sales" as The Royal Canadian Navy wore same identical uniform as the R.N. (Royal Navy) minus the insignia ie, "CANADA" to go with it!

Ask for Richard, as he is the Canadian specialist in this domain!!!

Hi, I was in Peterborough about a 1 1/2 years ago, and there was a Dk Blue other ranks RCN uniform at about $50.00 Cdn, I don't think it was postwar uniform. Red Canada flashes, might have beed additional badges, can't recall. Jumper and pants. It was still in the antique store late Sept 2010 last time I was through. I can't recall the name of the place but it was on the far East side of town on Hwy 7 just as the hwy entered the edge of town, North side. Someone from the area may know the name on this Forum, it was a good sized Flea Market with a number of booths. I suspect it is still there. A search on antiques in the area might locate the mall??

Thanks for the tip. I am not familiar with the Peterborough area, but a quick search of google maps and I think I may have found the place you are speaking of. I can try and call tomorrow, but if the place is a flea market type setup, then I might have trouble getting in touch with the actual vendor with the RCN uniform for sale. Doesn't hurt to try...

If you can locate the flea mkt, there is a small staff that man the mkt and they actual sell on behalf of the owners so contact would not be an issue. The set is located in the east side corner of the main booths area. Good luck! I think there was a spare jumper as well.

I contacted the flea market in Peterborough this morning. Good news - it was the right place. Bad news - both RCN uniforms they did have for sale just recently sold. I will keep looking. Thanks again for the lead.

Craig:

I have a heavy serge jacket and bell-bottomed trousers, and an HMCS cap, that I have had in my collection for a while. It all came from the same source, but I can offer no provenance. The trousers are named to "R.R. Lippert", but the other pieces are not named. They are NOT in pristine condition, and definitely show wear, soiling and some repairs. The cap is in very good shape and has a stamped label that I cannot read. I doubt that the ribbon bar is original to the uniform, but it all came together and I haven't changed it since acquiring it. It does not come with the shirt and collar that you are looking for.

I can send more pictures via PM if you are interested.

I am surprised that a string that is basically a plea to purchase a RCN uniform, has remained as long as it has on this forum. Perhaps we might try to stick with Army related posts and leave the sales and purchase of RCN kit to another forum.

You're right, Ed. I had the same thought when I read it, but decided to risk the wrath of the forum members with a response. Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow.
