Dieppe Raid Radio Log

In our museum collection we have a set of original notes taken during the Dieppe Raid. They were written while on the HMS Culpe. I can't imagine they are the "full" radio logs but more of a "benchmarking of events" as they unfolded.

Anyway below is the 11 sheets we have starting from the begining to the end. I've posted the originals followed by a transcript of what they say. Some of the writting was hard to read but I managed to figure it out one nightshift at work.

One thing that I ask, Can you while your reading try and figure out just who all the "coded names" are refering too. Some are easy to figure out but others Im not too sure.

Here is a list of the names I have. I may have missed 1 or 2, if you find any others please add them and post up your suggestions for the rest.

"Bob" = RHLI for Lt/Col Bob Labatt
"Doug" = possibly RRC or BlackWatch
"Cecil" = SSR for Lt/Col Cecil Merrit
"Joe" = ?
"Johnny" = ?
"Fred" = ?
"Rob" = ?
"Goose" = Calgary Highlanders for Lt/Col Ryan Gostling
"Freddy" = ?
"Ham" = for Gen Ham Roberts
"Bill" = ?
"Charlie" = ?

The other one that I can't figure out is "Hunters Force". Could this be the RCE group with the Jeeps tasked with blowing up the sea wall?

Ok, now for the notes.

HUNTER, HOUND and HARE were three scout cars under the command of Major Gordon M Rolfe (RCCS) so "Hunter's Force" may be a collective reference for these scout cars. You might want to try to obtain a copy of Hugh Henry's book, "Dieppe Through the Lens of the German War Photographer" from the After the Battle series. If you're REALLY interested you could try to get a copy of Henry's Master of Arts dissertation "The Tanks at Dieppe: The 14th Canadian Army Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment [Tank])" University of Victoria 1991, which is the basis of the book.

Thanks John

Ive got the 1st book. Hadn't even thought about the scout cars. It just struck me as odd since all the other "code names" were first names.

Hello to all

I'm doing the easiest part, sorry

Joe is Lt/Col Joe Dollard Menard CO FMR

Bill could be Major B. Sucharov RCE (leading 94 mens)

So the last uncoded could be :
Lt col Guy Standish Gostling Toronto Scottish
Major Mac Tavish RCE (leading 240 mens)
Then the commandos ...

Those sheets are a pieces of history, thanks a lot for sharing it with us

Charlie could be Royal marines commando A

Could Rob & Bob be the same ? Fred and Freddy also ?

By the way, it shows the chaos with achieving target reaching & report informations trough communication from the beach.

It confirm what we usually have to read : the heavy difficulties to push forward due to very heavy enemy fire.

Doug Catto was indeed CO of the RRC.
Forgive my need to ensure accuracy, but Doug Catto was never the CO of RRC (Royal Rifles of Canada). He was the CO of the Royal Regiment of Canada from July 19, 1942 (replacing G.H. Basher) to August 19, 1942 (technically he was not replaced until August 23, 1942, by A.H. Fraser). D.E. Catto became a PoW at Dieppe on August 19.

I can certainly understand why someone taking notes during the heat of the battle may have mistakenly referred to the Royals (R REGT C) as RRC. However, the RRC was having their own problems, in captivity in Hong Kong, in August 1942, having surrendered to the Japanese on Christmas Day 1941.

I was referring to The Royal Regiment of Canada of course.

It may interest you to know in turn that "The" is always capitalized in the title of the regiment, which you seem to have missed in your response.

I know this because my current OC is an ex-Royal who gave me grief last summer when preparing for our Dieppe tour.

Though I suppose when I call him an "Ex-Royal" anyone who served in the RCR (or is that The RCR) will tell me I don't know what I'm talking about there, either...
