I might be becoming a little less spoiler-phobic, knowing more deviations are forthcoming, and certain things are going to go the other way around - the show will start spoiling unpublished books... anyway, I read this. Sounds like both a reasonable theory and explanation for a book omission...

Benioff and Weiss know best, but I still think 8 seasons/80 episodes shouldn't be much of a stretch. I think it'd be fun if it were the first HBO drama to have eight seasons.

The split-season-to-avoid-paying-the-actors-and-crew-more thing is a dirty trick.

I have no doubt that there will be another HBO Westeros-set (whether it be prequel or sequel) series at some point in the future. Benioff and Weiss likely won't be heavily involved (they're exhausted and will be all set to move on), but I'm sure HBO won't easily let this cash cow go... and it's a big world with plenty of stories they could tell...

KMI, do you think it's 'safe' for me to start reading the books now? I don't want to be spoiled but I'm thinking the TV show has veered off from the books enough for me to be OK. Thoughts?

Definitely safe to read 1-3 now.
4 & 5 are what the show's doing next, plus 'beyond'.
I love that the show's going to start 'spoiling' the book readers... It's just funny.

Yes. read the books. I can't decide what it will mean for canon, because most of my bookwalker friends are now in a sort of hate-fugue with GRRM and have resigned themselves to the show spoiling the books. :P
