Ok so I know nobody else is watching this but I thought I'd give my impressions on this little experiment since we are now down to the end.

Way too much voting by America hurt the game a lot. It might have been ok with one or two voting elements but not 4 every week (nom, eviction vote, have-nots and care packages) it was overkill. It affected the strategies of the players in major ways and not good ones. It also kept the house divided the whole season and turned most of the BB fan sites into war zones.

Whoever did the casting this time did a really good job. I would have loved to see this cast on a normal season. They turned out to be a pretty fun group. We need this casting person for BB19.

The "sister twist" was a giant bust since nobody figured it out. The last sister remaining finally told the other 3 people left in the house this week and after 30 mins. or so of questions nobody really cared anymore.

There was no budget for this. It has come to be known as BBBudget rather than BBOTT to both houseguests and fans. It reminds me of very early seasons in that respect but after being used to big comp builds and higher production value it was a bit of a letdown.

Live DRs were good in the beginning but quickly turned into begging and pandering to America sessions because of the previously mentioned overkill Americas votes.

Loved the live comps, though sometimes they took forever. I now understand why we get such extended fish for some comps on regular seasons. The comps REALLY do take that long sometimes. Button boy isnt just napping lol. The night of the DE it took 12 hours (no joke) start to finish, then it still wasnt finished due to technical issues and had to be rerun the next night to determine the 2nd HOH.

Also I greatly appreciated the no sleeping during the day rule. Though most of them still found ways to sneak in naps it was much better than normal. Also the lack of fish was a very welcome improvement. I dont even know what most of the fish look like now thats how little we saw of them.

If they do this again, it needs a host. The little taped bits from Julie they did this time were just silly. It worked much better when they had the guest hosts (Jeff, Paul, Rachel) to keep things moving smoothly. They could let a past hg host this and it wouldnt hurt Julies standing as the BB host, imo.

So this season will end on Thursday and I fully expect Jason to be crowned the winner (because, Americas vote). He actually did play a decent game but he had a lot of help getting there. He probably played the best game of those left but my vote will go to Justin simply for entertainment value. The other 2 girls left have pretty much zero chance except for those who are voting anyone but Jason based solely on the fact they supported they opposite side of the house and felt the fix was in for Jason all along (it kinda was).

Overall I give BBOTT a solid C+/B- it had enough good points to make it worthwhile and with a few tweaks it could be a very viable model going forward if they wanted to get use out of the house and staff for more than a few months per year.

I will be happy to be done with BB for awhile. 5+ months straight of feed watching is wayyyy too much.

Thanks for the review. I was not one of those who thought having America vote was a good thing. The HG pander to America enough as it is. I would like to see live diary rooms with an interviewer like Jeff or Rachel, who can really dig into a person's thinking instead of the mindless "narrator-DR/catchphrase cutesyness" we get now.

I agree casting is always key. But II guess it's harder than it looks to predict how someone will interact and play.

The casting department would be all the same people, yes?

Sister twist sounds remarkable, though, for being the first time something like that WASN'T outed (and usually early). Three related hamsters, and people didn't know? Or knew two but not the third? Kinda interesting.

So wait - Julie didn't host the evictions?

A confrontational DR interviewer (Rachel, Evel Dick) would be fun, but they couldn't be trusted not to blab shit they shouldn't...

Yeah I feared Americas voting would be bad but this reached whole new levels of bad. Only 2 HOHs got out people they wanted out. Every other time America served up a nominee to the opposite side of the house to vote out resulting in many HOH winners sending home their closest allies. It was mildly amusing the first couple weeks then just became annoying.

The live DRs were not exactly normal style, it was just reading a set of questions off a prompter then answering them. They all got the same questions. Then whatever time was left they could fill with whatever they wanted to say. It was nice in the respect that they werent being led to say things as in normal BB but with few exceptions they just used each question to push their voting agendas to America.

Casting people were different this time since Robyn Kass who does regular BB was busy doing casting for BB Canada while this was being done. A guy did it this time, a few hamsters mentioned his name but I didnt make a mental note of it at the time. I do suspect there was some overlap though because at least 3 of the OTT cast were alternates for BB18. Of course Jason is also a Kass find.

Only 2 related hamsters and nobody knew. They did tell one girl when it was clear one of the sisters was going home but she was their closest ally so she kept the secret. The sister remaining in the house attempted to tell someone else to build trust but that person just laughed it off and thought it was a lie and never repeated it.

No Julie didnt host evictions. She would occasionally pop up in taped messages to tell them game stuff (there will be a DE, America will vote for winner/nom/hn etc) The only thing she did live was a 5 minute Q&A with the hgs on the day after the evictions. The only one that was remotely interesting was when she told them who won the election, the rest were just fluff bits. She also did a sit down interview with the evictees the day after but I never even watched any of those because the interviews done by others were usually posted first. The hamsters were pretty much left on their own for evictions. The HOH was given cue cards by the DR and prompted when to read them. Evictees just walked out into the dark hallway and disappeared. No walking out on stage, no audience. HOH comp questions were read by production for Q&As and in individual comps they were prepped in DR then given cue cards to read aloud before starting their turn so viewers knew the rules. Same for veto comps.

Its also very funny that they all went straight home and jumped on social media. That has actually been one of the more interesting things is getting that immediate reaction rather than them having all that cool off time in jury. Quite a bit of bitterness and snark left over with this bunch.

In another shockingly bad voting choice by America Jason did NOT win BBOTT. The win went to Morgan (the sister). Though I'm pretty shocked and sad for Jason since he did play the best game, Morgan isnt a terrible winner and we've now seen a girl beat a guy in the final twice in a row (if u count this as a BB season). Lots of rumors and speculation online about vote rigging/cheating but who knows.

Glad to be on a BB break until summer.

Returning player scorecard
-

Jason Roy
-
BB 17 -- placed 13th out of 17 houseguests
BBOTT (between 18 & 19) -- 2nd out of 13 houseguests

--

Will be interested to see if they do one in the spring...

So... okay-to-good cast, obviously limited budget, lots of fan wars, too much power to the audience, fatigue from you with the back-to-back...? They SHOULDN'T do this all the time, right? More franchise-diluting than building, correct?

If there's only one in-between, I'm good with referring to OTT as '18.5', but if they do a spring one, that gets complicated... 18.5.1 and 18.5.2?...

I haven't heard anything yet and everything in the finale and interviews with Julie and the producers was "see you next summer for BB19" so I dont think we will have a spring version. Everyone is very high on the concept though so depending on the subscriber numbers it wouldn't surprise me if they do it again next fall. I did see a few weeks ago that CBS All-Access was now in the top 10 of streaming services but I dont know where they were before so not sure if it was a big jump or not.

Yes on all counts. Very good cast. It was a fun change of pace but all the time would be too much. If they started it in say January rather than right after the summer show it would help with the fatigue factor but then it would lose the lead in and hype of the hardcore BB crowd. It was different enough that I dont think it diluted the franchise too much but definitely didnt build it either.

18.5 works.

I forgot to mention the finale was well produced. It was done like a regular live BB finale with Julie and the live audience. In alot of ways it was better though because the final pleas were already done and no jury questions left more time to chat with prior evictees and more fun recap clips. We got a DR highlight reel which was quite funny. Chenbot even cussed which was hilarious.

What cursing did the Chenbot do?

I do like her when she's not being so stiff...

It was just shit, but it was pretty perfectly timed. She did it right after basically chastising the hamsters for numerous f-bombs and cursing during the DR highlight segment and commenting how they were definitely not suitable for the broadcast version. It was very out of the blue and not Chenbot-like. She was much more relaxed during this finale. It was fun.
