Well, how can you play in Mandarin movies, if you
don't even speak Mandarin?

BRUCE

Well, first of all, I speak Cantonese.

BERTON

Yeah.

(beat)

In China, what did you think of the fighting
you saw in the movies you studied before
you became a star.

BRUCE

Well, I mean, definitely in the beginning,

I had no intention whatsoever, that I was
practicing and what I'm practicing now would
lead to...

Martial Art has had a very deep meaning
as far as my life is concerned, because as an
actor, as a martial artist, as a human being,
all these I learn from martial art.

BERTON

Maybe our audience who doesn't know what it means,
you might be able to explain what exactly you mean
by martial art?

BRUCE

Right

(beat)

Martial art includes all the combative arts like
karate.

BERTON

Judo.

122A

BRUCE

(agrees)

Judo.

Chinese Gung-Fu, or Chinese Boxing.

Whatever you call it.

(beat)

All those, you see like, Korean, Karate, and on
and on.

But it's a combative form of fighting. I mean some
of them became sport. But some of them became art,
still not, I mean some of them use for intense
kicking to the groin, jabbing figures to the eyes,
things like that.

BERTON

No wonder, you're successful in The Big Boss.

The Hong Kong movies are full of this action
anyway...

They need a guy like you.

Both of them start to laugh.

LATHROP

You missed again.

Think so?

Bruce opens it. He has the dime on his hand. The group begins to

RICHARDS, he makes a head-gesture move.

RICHARDS

Bruce, come over and talk to some guys at Warners about

we got a green-lit for this.

There's a lot of details to this...But.

Bruce? Are you sure about this?

Tong wars in Chinatown, 1878?

Bruce nods.

THORKEL

Alright.

But I may need to speak to Alan privately.
If you kindly please leave us, Bruce.

BRUCE

Okay.

THORKEL

I've...had talks with my people...

Bruce has been a consideration,
but nothing is more than that.

RICHARDS
(beat)

Then we've been misled.

THORKEL

Oh, no, no, I'd be happy to have him
for along the series.

He can be our technical advisor and can
stage some of the fights, but face it.

You know we can never sell a series with
a Chinese lead in it.

(NOTE: Alan will be like Brad Dourif in the sense of manner of a
character arguing.)

RICHARDS

(strict and quick)

That fucking part demands a fucking Chinese for it.

It's his story and his property.

THORKEL

Not necessarily. Not the way we envision it.

RICHARDS

Not only do I think you're wrong.

But I'm about to beat the living shit out of you.

Thorkel goes curious.

Alan rises out of his seat and grabs Thorkel and smacks him brutally

INT. LEE HOME - DAY

Bruce steams through the living room and then through a door that
leads into his small GYM. Linda comes into the living room, but Bruce
is gone, she goes to the door, Bruce has gone through.

INT. GYM

Bruce strides up to a full length mirror, and without pause, smashes
at it with the edge of his hand. The mirror cracks, cutting his hand,
but he attacks it again, picking up a low wooden bench to hurl. He
turns to swing at a punching bag, ripping it open.

He whips blow after blow at it while the sawdust sprays across the
floor.

CLOSE ON LINDA

She watched with a certain sympathy and understanding, then she turns
to leave.

BACK TO BRUCE

He is destroying the gym part by part and piece by piece. Sweat has
beaded on his face and it runs down rain off his chin.

Linda opens the medicine chest and starts to put some things together,
tape and iodine and a roll of gauze. The noise of Bruce's fury is
heard all the while.

She approaches to them.

They nod.

128

They run to their rooms.

Linda stares with a worried look.

BACK TO BRUCE

He had smashed a hole in the plaster wall with his clenched fist,
splintering the lath. He hammers at the until the rubble is deep
on the floor where he stands, then he stops.

He leans against the broken wall, his breath, coming, short spurts
totally spent, and he slowly turns to look across the room.

CLOSE ON LINDA

She stands in the doorway, holding an aluminum pan of water.

She starts forward.

CLOSE ON BRUCE

He slides down the wall to sit on the pile of broken plaster and he
rests his torn hands on his knees. Linda sits next to him and starts
to wash his hands.

BRUCE

Heh.

I knew it happened again.

She looks at Bruce for a moment, and he looks at her, also.

She starts filling tears from her eyes and then drops the towel and
the pan of water and starts to hug Bruce.

LINDA

I'm sorry, honey.

Bruce hugs Linda.

He fills tears from his eyes like a brave man.

CAMERA ZOOMS OUT as they still hug.

Alan stares at Fred with a frown on his face.

RICHARDS

Are you fucking serious?

WEINTRAUB
Yes, I'm fucking serious.

Originally, Bruce's original writings
included petty on itself, very brutal
violent scenes that Warners wasn't accepting
that I could see on their faces reacting on
while Bruce was talking a bunch on a meeting
that he didn't see the reactions.

Yep.

It sure makes me want to get Bruce for a movie.
RICHARDS

Yeah, but that's a hard thing for you to convince
Warners to do that kind of stuff.

WEINTRAUB

Why so?

RICHARDS

Alexander Thorkel did not liked his and mine's proposal
which ended up getting me angry, brutally knocking that
hopeless piece of shit cocksucker.
