I just buy the Worker ones from Lightake, they are so cheap it's not worth making your own.
I also found a substantial increase in both muzzle velocity and precision using the Worker darts in my Pwnsneeper and sealed breech retal.
If you still want to make your own I use a piece of 17/32 ID brass tube, 50mm long, with the factory end as the cutting end. Feed the dart in from the other end, use a steel ruler to measure 30mm of FOAM, total length should be 35mm, then cut with a razor blade against the square edge of the brass.
As for which dart to cut down that depends on what velocity you are shooting and your barrrel fit. If you are using any springer with a functional barrel all dart types where the head is the same size as the foam will be no good, so this means X tip, Z tip, Accufakes, Koosh and suckers.  All those will snag in the barrels of most of the common  kits and anything under about 13.2mm ID.
That's the genius of the Worker darts, the tip is smaller than the head and the flat tip is superior aerodynamically to the pointed ACC type.

If you want to sit and cut a load down (it's quite zen) the common types are all good pistol ammunition. I load all my revolvers with accuslugs or Artifact stefans, makes them much more accurate and you get 40% more barrel length out the cylinder.
At FFS Worker were by far the best short dart. Almost nobody who had a choice was using the other types after the first game or two.

If you are going for shear velocity, then Prototype ACC'S are the way to go. However, hard tipped darts are forbidden at FFS.

Those are hideous darts, they need to be destroyed with fire.
The reason you get high velocities out of them is they are a lower mass. I actually found a 15% increase in power from ACC type tips to Worker V2 out of my Longshot.
You can just shoot a slice of foam and a bit of tip weight and get 300fps- Psysk shows you how.

I know if you put FBR blanks into a blaster they go berzerk. Worker darts in my testing perform about 70FPS lower than ACC gen 3 darts In my apollo plunger tube, 22KG star shot, and about 30FPS below in my pink crush. It's a weird phenomenon because the heads of the dart cannot drag as they are substantially slimmer than the foam.

It will be to do with your barrel diameter. Everyone at FFS was using only Worker ones by the end of the day, that was with a mix of springers up to 250fps.

I've found I was getting roughly 20-30fps less with Workers over ACC style, in both 9/16 and 17/32 full brass barrels. But I'd happily trade that fps drop for the accuracy gain. Workers will hit a 1' square target at 50' pretty much every time for me, whereas the sweet oranges I used were lucky to hit the wall the target was on!

The only time ACC have been any good was at FFS where the wild curves meant I hit someone who was in cover behind a barricade: the ACC dart actually swerved downwards over the barricade and tagged them out by pure fluke!
If you're not having fun you're doing it wrong
