<t>The first pistol appears to have been refinished to me, possibly by Parker Hale, in England. The barrel has been cut down and the grips/ front sight are not S&W. You would likely find more detailed expertise at smith-wessonforum.com but the points I mentioned and the badly fitted sideplate ma...

I've experienced the spring housing being a bit dented so the small part can't telescope into the big one. It'll still come apart as above, and you can re establish some concentricity wiith the back end of close fitting drill bits.

<r>I have one of those, an 1869, I think. The barrel was about 40-44 caliber and the fore end screw/spike fastener intruded into the "bore" roughly 1/4". It now has a fresh 38-40 bore and has been of some enjoyment to the gunsmith for the last 3 years. <br/> There is a very nice reference book <URL ...

It has a .308 bore, but I'm not clear on twist. It's a bit shorter than 32-40, but the same idea. I ran it with some cast loads that the seller provided and it did well.. That was 5-6 years ago, need to re prioritize, I think.

It looks to be split on both sides, from the picture. Guessing it's the cylinder locking bolt.
