Thank you Double D My original querey was  what load of 'Trail Boss'  would work  in the  WR No 2 Musket as a'  nitro for black'  ,having found that powder improuved my Vetterlies performance  ,Hence the Vetterlis got into it.  I know Wal Winfer well  but don't have his book what sort of date would  rifle number 1645 be.      Regards  Rudyard

Rudyard - I have checked Wal's book and your rifle is not in it

There appears to be no sequence in WR's numbering, with 1869, 1871 and 1881 models issued with serial numbers randomly possibly from a "block" system  anything in the 1870's is likely and possible

RDT - Whilst studying the numbers for Rudyard, I am afraid I misled you (again!!) about dates for your rifle and as above, anywhere in the 1870s is possible

My own 1871 rifle is numbered earlier than my 1869 carbine!

If anyone on the board has anything more definite on WR serial numbers I would be very appreciative

Tony

Dear Tony   I don't think Wal was  bothered about  WR Improuved he was mostly into Falling blocks , I would collect them from the auction houses and tend to the export  requirments & post them  all stoutly boxed up for him .  Ime guess ing 1870s makes sence  I think they are Improuved over the Govt sort .  .I hunted with it in the Uraweras , Heavy thing never had a shot .. Thank you for looking it up    Regards  Rudyard
