The Hazelton Wolverines are still searching for their first win of the season after falling 6-1 to the Smithers Steelheads on Saturday in front of their hometown crowd.

While they are struggling and getting frustrated, they are also improving every week head coach Fred Hudson said adding they will continue to address the issues and focus on the positive.

It is frustrating but there is no lack of effort, he said. This is still a learning process and we are having small successes but not enough to win a game yet. I am proud of the guys and their effort and it will come and our goal is still to become a really good team for the playoffs.

The Wolverines came out looking like a solid team in the first but after a few quick goals the tables started to turn. It was 3-0 for the Steelheads after the first and while they widened their lead in the second, Hazelton managed to hold them to one. The Wolverines came out focused in the third and finally found the twine when Mitch Marshall capitalized on a feed from Travis Beebe. However, Smithers was able to take advantage of two more mistakes and finished the game with the 6-1 advantage.

As for the game summary from Hudsons point of view, there were a lot of positives but room for improvement as well.

We have a problem with lack of aggression and you cant play high calibre hockey with out it, he shared. We seem to sit back and we have been working on it but we are still a little tentative when we should be aggressive. Our communication is slowly getting better but we dont talk enough and our puck movement needs to be better. Our defence was a little slow to react and make a decision but they are aware of it. The forwards were swinging into position well though and we are making progress but simple things are costing us. We have the skills and we have good hockey players but we are making some mental errors and in this game it is the team that makes the least amount of mistakes that wins.

In addition to working hard to become a better team there were also a few new players in the lineup on Saturday who hadnt had the chance to practice much as a team, Hudson said.

While the Wolverines have this week off before heading to Terrace next week, Hudson said they will stay focus and continue to work hard.

Its a young team and we are going to keep working on things and improving, he said. We are going to keep upbeat and have a positive attitude.

The Smithers Steelheads dominated the Hazelton Wolverines once again after beating them 6-1 Saturday night.

The Steelheads have been gaining momentum these past couple of weeks taking down the Kitimat Ice Demons last weekend twice in a row, they are showing a trend that could lead them to the Coy Cup.

Hazelton on the other hand is still searching for their first win of the season.
