I think this version of Bowie's take is actually pretty good. Tina is higher in the mix, and the tracks sounds more active in general. I wish strings were more prominent over the entire album.

Bowie's version of "Tonight" gets put upon quite a bit, and while reggae reworking would not have been my first choice, there's something distinctly Bowie about singing such odd, nondescript declarations over an unassuming beat. Similar to lines like "If you should fall," peppered throughout "Let's Dance," this version of the Iggy song still carries quite an ominous undertone.

I think Iggy Pop version is deeper. Iggy says a sentence at the beginning of the song important for the rest of the song. Bowie version is exotic, it sounds like a song for hollidays...I don't know...maybe it was second degree and I didn't hear it?

Iggy for me

Bowie's version is sickly sweet!

Worst period in his musical career popp.

I never ever listen to any of it and haven't done since the late 1980's

I try to not think about it.

Bowie. have always love this track. Simple, touching, great arrangement. I would never exchange this one for Beauty and the beast or Repetition. Or Heathen (the rays) wich is imo far more ridculous than anything on Tonight. A lot of the Tonight tracks (5 or 6) have a great production, colored and luminous. Iggy's version is not bad but the worst Lust for life song imo.

Its a complete misfire on DB's part I'm afraid. It sounds like he had no interest in it.

Iggy - no contest. Bowie's pap reggae snore-athon with Tina is the worst thing he ever did. And I quite like much of the Tonight album (and listen to the superb vocals on God Only Knows (yes the arrangement is wet, but listen to that voice!!)). But on this Iggy cover Bowie is really phoning it in an the horrid 1984 production does it no favours either.
Iggy's original, with Bowie and Hunt Sales wailing away in the background is wonderful, powerful, emotional and engaging. Bowie's attempt is none of those things.
