Does anybody on here know what Bowie's "image" was when he recorded the majority of Ziggy Stardust?

Since late 1972 when I bought the album I have always imagined the person in Trident recording it to be the pre-red haired OGWT Bowie with the short blondish mullet hair as he was on the cover of Ziggy.

However, as he recorded most of it in 1971, was it the Suzi Fussey first attempt crop as seen below or the long straight haired Hunky Dory man that belted out the legendary album...?

The best guide is Cann's Any Day Now I guess, but there is no definitive answer..Does anyone know (or care)?
