Does the 'remaster' mean they've got the stereo tape of these sessions now? I'm sure the tape I heard at a collector's house back in the late 90's was stereo.

"This album due for release in November but you can Pre Order it here!

Ava Cherry was a young cat walk model working the paris fashion shows when she bumped into David Bowie in 1972 at Stevie Wonders party in new york .

Ava sang backing vocals at Bowies 1980 Floor Show TV broadcast and again with Bowie on U.S Tv's Dick Clark show . Ava continued to sing with Bowie as she appeared on the Young Americans album and the subsequent tour to promote it. Then joining fellow backing singer Luther Vandross to tour the world for ten very successful years.

Initially these recordings were never finished off due to David Bowies commitment to his Diamond Dogs album and his later legal battle with his ex manager Tony Defries.

These are the recordings which include 4 Bowie compositions (I am a Laser would eventually re surface in 1980 on the Scary Monsters album as Scream like a Baby) alongside songs by Frank Zappa, Beach Boys, Roy Harper, Annette Peacock and Bowies, then current fixation, Bruce Springsteen.

Released in 1995 on CD as an extremely limited edition on the Golden Years label this re mastered version also includes an in depth interview with Ava herself by ex Mojo editor and renowned author Paul Trynka.

Ava Cherry has her first new album in ten years released in the UK in April 2009 and an anthology is being compiled also.

Nice find!

I've got both versions of the 1885 edition, but I don't think I've ever played the full cd. Oh well, another version won't hurt!

Wasn't Ava Cherry recording at Sigma Sound during the Diamond Dogs July '74 residency at the Tower Theatre? I've read somewhere that DB dropped in and decided that's where his next LP would be recorded. I'm trying to figure out what it was that was being recorded then.

They were Roman. There was listing of three tracks at least I recall one of them being Sweet Thing produced by Michael Kamen.

Hopefully some of this stuff makes it to the anthology along with the 'I am a laser' video.

hi

I never got that album.. and now I guess I should.

Which to get ?

Ava Cherry ‎– The Astronettes Sessions
Black Barbarella Records ‎– BBarbcd001

Ava Cherry And Astronettes, The ‎– People From Bad Homes
Lemon Recordings ‎– CDLEM155
(that one has a reallly ugly cover)

Anything particularly different from those 2 reissues ?

I had not listened to these songs in a long, long time and I must admit I had never payed attention to the lyrics in I Am a Laser.

"You know I switched the heat on / when you feel my golden shower"

Bugger - just wrote a reply but it got eaten. Basically, they should've released this without Bowie's guide vocals as they made the mixes very messy. Should put out two versions - one with just the Astronettes so like we'd have heard it if it came out in '74, plus a version using Bowie's guides mixed in as leads without the Astronettes lead vocals - basically that's a whole new Bowie album from '74!

I liked the album - Zappa's 'Fool' and 'Laser' are cool curios - didn't bother too much with 'Divine' as you had to rewind the CD to hear it, like the Pin Ups advert on RarestOne.

I'll have to find my CD, I am sure I have it somewhere, these are the main variations as discogs entries, the timings look the same, but that could be inaccurate data sharing...it is generally an excellent site / guide for releases.

I've got a version of the Astronettes cd (the one with the crappy red cover and cheap photo)
and I agree with most of the comments here.
Good to have as a curio, but can't say I've played it more than a handful of times.
If the Sigma Sound invoice means that Ava recorded Bowie's Sweet Thing, however, that's something I'd love to hear.
Well, at least once, anyway...

She should have changed to a different fruit, say instead of Cherry, something like Banana.

'Ava Banana!'

it's a shame that nothing else surfaced from the video - other than that one image

...and, of course - the cover of "Sweet Thing"
which, to me is even more frustrating - b/c didn't someone recently find an acetate of it?

("recently" as in the past year or so)
