"Adele is set to break David Bowie's record in terms of number of weeks spent at Number One in the UKs Official Albums Chart this weekend.

The singer's monstrously successful second album '21' is set to achieve its 23rd week on top of the Official UK Album Chart this Sunday (March 5), passing David Bowie and Dire Straits's record of 22 weeks."

I don't like her but good for her I guess.

I don't think this means that much in todays terms. Years ago the albums had to sell more and a lot more competition was about then.

I don't see anything special about this woman, she bores me to tell the truth Shane.

But I'm a lot older than you and a cynic

NOTE: We are talking about Bowie and Dire Straits CAREER RECORD where as Adelle will be beating this with just this ONE record. Crazy shit.

She needs 29 weeks to beat Madonna's career record - the only female artist ahead of her.

That said, the top is a long way off yet...The Beatles have amassed a career total of 174 album weeks at Number 1.

tongue firmly in cheek

Okay, so I have some vague notion who she is - but care not a jot.

As to breaking 'His' record shrug Meh. Charts mean little in the long run, they merely offer yet another meaningless statistic that fans, pundits and trivia buffs will latch on to and spout off at a moments notice.

The joys of being an eccentric academic, I can wallow in 'old' music (as my students refer to it, when they think I'm out of earshot, knowing full well I'll go off pop if they said it to my face) and then poke my head out and natter at them about oddball groups like my latest fav 'The New Piccadillys' -- thus re-establishing myself as "the cool prof" (fickle beings, my students).

As to Adele - she lacks class and needs to grow up. Acting like a child is over done in media circles. Sadly, it seems to be working for her.

Oh I weep for humanity if SHE is the pinnacle to which the youth of today aspire become.

Dear me... I am getting cynical in my 'advanced' years -- which is sad since I have not yet reached middle age.

GAH!

*retreats back to her hole, to drown amongst dusty tomes of communication strategies, Internet theory and fan-based art communities*

The actual sales are way down compared to years ago though aren't they? just sayin'.

Good luck to her I guess though I'm not quite sure which one she is...

seems you don't have to be very special to break any records these days.
she reminds me of a poor alison moyet, at least she made a few catchy pop songs.
adele is well overrated same as that overgrown jellybaby ed sheeran i just don't get it.
they are both as painful to look at as they are to listen to.
mundane dross imo.

She's sold over 17 million copies so far, almost 3 times what Let's Dance originally sold, I guess this illustrates how, with instant media, albums can snowball through word of mouth and the sheep like mentality of the public.

Not saying it's a bad album, but if Hunky Dory came out when Facebook / Myspace / Itunes was around, no way would it have bombed on initial release. Word would have spread like wild fire.

Also, albums are cheaper now, 20 years ago TM2 and BTWN both cost me about £14 on CD, now 21 can be picked up for £7. Take into account inflation, and they're something like a quarter of their original price. Recorded music is a bit more disposable now.

Will she still be around making records in 30 years time though? Probably not.

However she seems to have a nice voice and refreshingly down to Earth. The best of British to her I guess.
