I threw a couple of cameras on the P-47 - and decided to salvage some of the video for some on-board views....

I took the Pitts out yesterday to try again.  This is a little $100 plane from China that was mostly crap.  It came with ZERO instructions and a lot of the parts to put it together were missing - so I had to make some parts.  The first couple of times I flew it it would barely get off the ground - it was so under-powered.  So I pulled the tiny little factory  motor out of it and put in a Cobra motor I had in stock.  I'd bought this little motor years ago just have in inventory.  I really like Scorpion motors - but they are the Cadillac of motors and are very expensive.  The Cobra is more of an economy motor - and I'd never tried one.
Boy - it has LOTS of power now!  Just hops off the ground.

Anyway - now that it has power enough to actually fly, I flew it about 20 minutes - doing about 6 or 7 flights - trying to get the control throws and exponential rates adjusted.  I think I finally got it tuned in pretty well at the end.  Since it had not instructions I had to guess with the center of gravity should be - and I think it is still just a bit tail heavy.  It was really wanting to "porpoise" on me at first.  I'll put in a slight larger/heavier battery next time and see how it does.  But, even though the kit had cheap parts, the airframe seems to fly quite nicely....

I scrounged around in my stash 'o parts and cobbled together this little panning camera mount to put on my FMS PT-17 Stearman biplane.
If the weather ever warms up a little I'll give it a try in the air.   Might be interesting mounting the camera shooting rearwards on it, too.

I took my PT-17 Stearman out with my new home-hacked panning camera mount out to give it a try today.  It seemed to work OK.  My health hasn't been the best the past 9 months so I'm not quite up to par on my flying skills - but I gave it my best shot.
I designed this little "panning/sweeping" camera mount so I could "look around" during flight.  A little metal gear servo with a "slow-down-the-slew-rate" gizmo and a "increase the sweep range to 180 degrees" gizmo hooked up in series.  Seemed to work fine.  I accidentally dropped my head camera the other evening and broke my little home-hacked head-mount for my Canon S120 - so had to make a new one.  And, in the past, it's taken me a few flights to get the angle of the mount adjusted right to keep the plane in the view.  I thought I got pretty close this time on my first try for a whole new basswood cut-out and glued together mount.  It was just angled a tad bit low and left.  I'll tweak that next time and bet I get it pretty close.  Then I'll use a little marker to mark the correct position so I can adjust it there again.

With the battery, cameras, panning mount, etc - the all up weight is a bit over 3 pounds.

Anyway - here's the flight today.  Short & sweet.  Nothing fancy.  Did a hard full-power loop and it got exciting for a bit - but I recovered.  ;-)  Don't go full throttle when you get to the top of the loop!  ha ha....
