We haven't got any new players so far. This is considered...

A. A good thing. We only buy rubbish players anyway
B. A bad thing. We are missing out, twiddling our thumbs while everyone else leaps ahead of us.
C. Boooo! McCabe out!

We haven't sold anyone yet either. This is considered...

A. A good thing, for the players who are 'must keep', especially true for any that have been regularly described as 'the worst whatever in a United shirt'
B. A bad thing, We're selling all our best players, again, for a pittance, so they might as well get on with it.
C. Boooo! McCabe out!

Our pre-season games are Rotherham and Morecambe. These are considered...

A. A nice day out at a new stadium, and the seaside.
B. Pointless. Why aren't we playing Inter Milan?
C. Boooo! McCabe out!

I'll update as we go along. Enjoy the summer and UTB...

For me....

- The club are right to press McDonald, Willo and Porter for decisions. The sooner we know, the sooner we can move on.

- The couple of names I have heard us linked with are Ben Parker and David Wotherspoon. Parker is a left back, 24 and released from Leeds. Sounds like a fair player who may have lost his way. Taylor is out, Parker is a reasonable punt. Wotherspoon plays for Hibs. I assume he has caught Deardon's eye and we might be able to get him. No nothing about him but then knew nothing of Flynn and he seems ok - just needs to step it up in his second season. Not sure what may or may not happen with Kitson or even if its real.

- The released list had the right names on it.

- Ambition to promote Ironside and Whitehouse into the first team squad is correct and feels like the right thing to do.

- Key will be to retain, Lowton, Maguire and Collins. If we are able to retain Quinn then we will have done very well indeed.

For Porter to be dithering over a new contract beggars belief and I find it difficult to believe that he will find another employer who will top what Wilson has offered him.He is lucky to be at the club at this particular time and in different circumstances I doubt if he would have been offered an extension of his terms. With regards to McDonald and Willo, they both owe the club a debt of gratitude and it would be good to see them repay the club who has stood by them despite their injury prone careers;but I am not holding my breath.

Personally, I view every 'disaster' like a player not re-signing as an opportunity to lower the wage bill and find someone younger and hungrier. Of course this assumes that we can find one younger and hungrier, where we have a patchy record.

Anyway, of the three only McDonald can really say that he has achieved any kind of consistency in his performances for us, (other than consistently disappointing, that is...), so we'll see. There are loads of decent players out of contract this summer and looking for clubs, and Billy Dearden has shown that he can pick out a good 'un, although you never know how well payers will 'gel' until you put them together. Here's hoping...

Excellent post Duncan, no doubt it will be option C for the majority. Porter "considering" a new contract really is a comical moment....It must be because it has a goal scoring clause in it, and he cant guarantee the ball will hit him again in the six yard box a la Stevenage twice in a decade..... He plays like Bambi on ice....

For me, a lower point would be actually paying money for Tommy Lee, did you see him at the Lane? terrible keeper, I'd give George a shot before I stooped to playing him in our goal.

It is difficult to know how many links are genuine, but as you say, many will have to leave before we can even consider replacements, which for me, have to be free transfers.

When Monty began, he played right-back and played well, I would consider, should we not be able to off-load him, re-training him for that position, and pocketing any fee raised by the sale of Lowton, who for me looks a very good prospect......

Enjoy your summer Duncs.
We live to fight again.
One of the best seasons for a long time imho.
Pity about how it turned out.
Hope your daughter had better luck in her A levels.

Loyalty seems very much in short supply these days.
It is often better to stick with those you know than to be greedy.
Look at Slew as an example.
Is it about playing football or earning lots of money.
I am sure Slew would have played football if he had stayed.

Hi Kenty, trust you and yours are well, and grandson is recovering.

Awaiting the results for No.1 daughter. A new sense of realism (...and an unheard of workrate) came over her after walking out of the mocks having 'bossed it', to later find it was straight 'E's. Just another step towards growing up. Hurrah!

Anyway, just trying to forget football for a while and enjoy all the freetime on Saturdays, which Mrs D seems to have hijacked with an infinate number of chores...
