John. Could you talk a little about Vic Berton inventing the the high hat? I thought it said in the Henderson 4-set that Walter Johnson had worked with a drum manufacturer to create that. I guess Big Sid and all those drummers were always talking shop.

Its an anecdote in Ralph Berton's book Remembering Bix. The younger Berton isn't all that reliable a witness to Bix, having been around the Wolverines for the summer of '24, and drawn on other sources for a lot of his 'remembering.' But he talks about Berton working out a foot-pedal cymbal arrangement and not patenting it for himself.
