Hello dear Bixophiles,

During the course of my ongoing research on the Original Memphis Five, while going through some custom-made-for-me microfilm duplicate rolls of the "Metronome" magazine, I've stumbled over the following picture which I had never seen before:

This appeared in the Metronome issue of November 1929, p.25, and the caption reads: "Paul Whiteman leading the brass section of his orchestra".
As Metronome's deadline for going to press was the 15th of the previous month, and as the photo surely was at least a few weeks old at that time, I think it is almost certain that this photo was taken before September 13, 1929, the day Bix was forced to leave the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
Thus, I think Bix should be visible in this picture. Can anyone identify him ?

Alas, the musicians are pictured from the back, the photo is underexposed and the resolution is rather poor.

I've seen a picture so similar that I suspect it was taken at the same time. Bix was visible in that one.

In the main Bixography website:

The three trumpet payers are from left to right: Goldie, Margulis and Bix.

thanks a lot, Albert.
I should have checked the photo section of the Bixography website, before posting.

Bix, and also Margulis, play "more to the sky" in the Metronome photo.

So, strictly speaking, this is a "new" photo of Bix !!!

Yes, slightly different. Likely same location and same day.

That upward-pointing thing isn't really natural. Note how all the brass players comply with the pose in different ways. Margulis isn't buying it at all.

"The three trumpet payers are from left to right: Goldie, Margulis and Bix."
Thanks to David Sager for this correction: from right to left!
