I guess UCI will announce the signings of J.C Butler and Dawson Baker next week. We haven't had a Spring signing since Conor Clifford back in 2012.

When Butler announced his commitment, I was reluctant to talk about it too much. I wanted the scholarship situation to sort itself out first. Now, that we know who is leaving (Wertner) and who has left (Smith), the situation is settled.

I have only seen the video highlights of Butler, but there are a lot of them. Of course, unless you see an entire game, you don't get a sense of the holes in a player's game. Highlights just show the best moments. Anyway, he looked very good in what I saw and looks like a really good prospect for the mid major level. AFAIK, he only got other scholarship offers from Milwaukee and Green Bay, which surprises me. Maybe, he grew a few inches in the last year or two and that has something to do with it. He is listed at 6'5" now, but I believe he was shorter for most of his high school career.

A couple things stood out to me. One is that he is very fluid and has excellent body control, as well being athletic. He also looks like a well rounded player who defends, passes, and can handle the ball. His shooting percentages outside of layups are good, but not great. I guess that outside shooting is the biggest question I would have. What I saw in the highlights looked good, but, again, that's just the highlights. He shot 35% 3pt and 76% FT as a senior and his senior year, his 3pt attempts went way up (155 attempts from only 58 attempts as a junior). So, it appears that his outside shooting is a part of his game that he is developing recently.

Ideally, for a small forward, you want somebody who is athletic and well rounded and he seems like he brings those qualities to the table. It also can't hurt that he seems to have a good family behind him and he's got some leadership qualities. One recurring theme in the reports on him is that he was an unselfish player and understood how to play within the framework of the team, while at the same time being the leader.

8 Jones
9 Greene

Butler should make 12. Dawson is going on a mission. That's all I know.
