Just two senior position players and a JUCO transfer-in pitcher Brubaker are drafted from UCI.  I thought pitchers Bocko and Rashi could be picked as well.  Brubaker should be on campus in the fall.

Bocko is listed at 5'11" and doesn't throw hard so that's why there wasn't interest in him.

It was interesting that Rashi didn't appear on BA's SoCal list.  Figured that he would be on there with his track record the last two years and being 6'4" that somebody would draft him.

Hawaii update:

“I’m excited,” Rios said. “I feel I’m ready. I didn’t go as high as I wanted. All I wanted was an opportunity, and I got an opportunity. Now it’s time to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities you get.”

“We’re happy for Kekai,” UH coach Mike Trapasso said. “He’ll go out and get after it and make us proud, like I know he will. We’re super happy for Kekai. He’s a great kid and he has a great family.”

Thomas received calls ahead of Wednesday’s start of the final day of the 40-round draft. Teams expressed interest in picking Thomas between the 10th and 15th rounds if the parties could agree on a pre-selection price.

“I was telling them I wanted way too much money, I think,” said Thomas, who has the option of returning to UH as a fourth-year junior. Thomas was draft eligible because he redshirted in 2016 before pitching for the Rainbow Warriors the past two seasons.

If he had accepted an offer below his asking price, Thomas said, “then I think they would have taken me early (Wednesday). I wasn’t going to settle for that low when I know I have the Cape this summer and next year (at UH) ahead.”

Thomas is scheduled to leave his family home in California today to pitch in the Cape Cod (Mass.) Baseball League this summer.

On being selected by the Twins, Thomas said: “I wasn’t even sure I was going to hear my name called. It felt great to hear it come from that speaker.”

Thomas led the Big West with 14 saves. The past season, Thomas averaged 9.9 strikeouts and 0.92 walks per nine innings.

Two UH recruits — Joey O’Brien of College of Southern Idaho and Chris Allen of College of Marin — were drafted. The Mariners picked O’Brien, a pitcher/designated hitter, in the sixth round on Tuesday. The Chicago Cubs selected Allen, a left-handed pitcher, in the 20th round a day later. Both agreed to contracts on Wednesday.

UCSB update:

Davis and Fisher had clearly done enough before they got hurt to prove to the Reds and Orioles, respectively, that they were ready for the next level.

Checketts believes they are ready as well. UCSB's seventh-year coach also thinks they would have been selected higher in the draft had they not run into elbow problems.

"Unfortunately for both of those guys, injuries got in the way," Checketts said. "I think their talent level warrants them being drafted four or five rounds higher than where they were drafted, but injuries slowed them down.

"They were fantastic teammates and really did a nice job for us while they were here. Both of them were a big part of that Omaha experience (at the College World Series), and we're going to miss them."

Checketts is hopeful Andrew Martinez will return to help the Gauchos next season, and at the same time, help improve his draft stock.

"I'd be surprised if he signed," Checketts said. ... "I think Andrew values himself a little bit more than the 33rd round. We'll see what happens and what the Marlins are talking about from an offer perspective, but I would expect him to come back."

Hawaii recruit O'Brien signed for 225K (slot bonus value 267K).  He was drafted well ahead of where he was projected to and said that bonus sounded good to him.

Hawaii Friday SP Rees signed with Toronto as an UDFA after not getting drafted.  He was a 4th year JR who had already graduated and was obviously ready to move on.

It's naturally presumed that's what the SR's have signed for but some teams are slower about releasing signing info than others and Fitzpatrick hasn't been listed yet by BA or the MLB transactions list.  The grandson was just listed yesterday as signing.

Yep.  Fitzpatrick wasn't on MLB.com's transactions yet, but the Chisox seem to be a few days late in reporting to them.

Grandson signed for the plane ticket only.  No spending money for the bus trips.  [commentary excluded]
