Super 8's now being rated as 2*s instead of 1*s

There are reports, along with my personal experience, that Super 8 motels are now being rated as 2*'s.  Previously they were rated as 1*s.  As anyone who have stayed in Super 8's can attest, they are lower in overall quality than what are typically awarded as 2*'s by Priceline, like Fairfield Inns, Holiday Inn Expresses, La Quintas, Ramadas and Best Westerns.  I personally rate them below Days Inns.

This isn't just my opinion, but Priceline's.   Priceline, on their "Priceline 1 STAR Hotels" page, lists Super 8 Motels as an example of a "1 Star" motel.

If there is a Super 8 Motel in the zone you are bidding on, I would strongly advise not using Priceline if you are bidding on a 2* property.

(Edit: Removed link to PL's "1 star" quality page per Sheryl's comment below.  I'm trying to find a way to link directly to it.)

Your post is fine with the following caveats. The hotels you listed as 2* hotels (not Super 8) are all rated 2.5* now except some Best Westerns and Ramadas that are rated 3*. Also when you post a Priceline link that has your Session ID in it, it just resolves to their homepage for anyone else clicking on it so please do not post a link to Priceline that has a Session ID in it.

Priceline has been re-rating most of their lower quality hotels over the past two years. I feel the same as you do about this. It's wrong!

I agree with you both, ratings-creep is a blight upon Priceline. Priceline has EVERYTHING to lose. One of the biggest reasons so many of us came to trust Priceline for opaque bookings is that they were stringent in their ratings, for the most part. They are obviously feeling pressure from other suppliers offering opaque bookings, but Priceline is the one with the reputation to lose. The other opaque channels must surely know this, so why doesn't Priceline? I've seen hotels that Priceline rates as 3* getting up to five stars (the max) elsewhere.

If Priceline does not defend the integrity and meaning of its star-ratings, the game they have pioneered and perfected will be lost.

This is not unlike the issue with "resort fees" that you don't know about until you check in, and which you are required to pay. In some cases, these fees are as much as $20/night (or more), and can approach 50% of the room rate paid on Priceline. When I tell Priceline that I will name a rate of $40/nite, I do not mean $60. And when I say I want a 2* hotel, I do not mean a Super8 or Red Roof.
